One of my favorite places is Fort McRee, which was one of three major United States fortifications built to strengthen defense efforts at Pensacola Bay after the War of 1812. It was located on the eastern end of Foster’s Bank in Perdido Key, and only accessible by boat. Very little of the fort remains, but this former history teacher loves to spend early mornings there admiring the beauty, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells, and looking for seashells, feathers, driftwood, and other similar treasures.
