Join your host Annette Perel, a doula for over 17 years, for The Clearbirth Podcast!
Broken up into segments that reflect the stages of pregnancy including, the First Trimester, Second Trimester, Third Trimester, Labor, and Postpartum, Annette details her longest labor with a magical client.
But first, she takes the time to remember Dr. Shalon Irving PhD, MPH, MS, CHES, a mother gone too soon who died shortly after giving birth to her daughter Soleil. Dr. Shalon, an epidemiologist at the CDC, devoted much of her career to health care disparities and structural racism. Her death sparked outrage and heartache and showed the world that even an esteemed scholar and educated Black woman could be neglected by the healthcare system.
Later, Annette tells the story of a special client’s long labor. Can you guess how many days it lasted? Yes, days. You’re gonna have to tune in to hear all about it.
It’s an episode that will show you that every labor is different and that’s okay. We can’t wait to hear what you think about it.
This podcast is all about demystifying all things pregnancy, birth, and beyond so that women know they have a choice and agency when it comes to their care and raising their children. It’s also a platform for listeners to voice their questions and tell their stories.

Broken up into segments that reflect the stages of pregnancy including, the First Trimester, Second Trimester, Third Trimester, Labor, and Postpartum, Annette details why she became a doula.
But first, she takes the time to remember Marlise Nicole Muñoz, a mother gone too soon who died while 14 weeks pregnant. Marlise’s pregnancy and death sparked much conversation about women’s autonomy over their bodies and challenged the law in Texas, which states that pregnant women must receive life sustaining measures even if, in Marlise’s case, they are brain dead.
Later, Annette discusses what training as a doula was like, how it felt to (unexpectedly) catch her first baby, the different types of doulas—including death doulas, and her personal miscarriage experiences, IVF journey, and more.
It’s an episode that will make you laugh out loud, pause, and reflect about all things life, death, birth, and babies.
But that’s all we’ll share for now. You’ll have to tune in to hear how she realized she wanted to become a doula and what her math teacher said to her to make her realize the OBGYN route was not her path.

Broken up into segments that reflect the stages of pregnancy including, the First Trimester, Second Trimester, Third Trimester, Labor, and Postpartum, Annette details the pros and cons of having a home birth.
But first, she takes the time to remember Nikita Washington, a Detroit mom of 12 who died shortly after giving birth. The maternal mortality rate for Black women and women of color is egregious, and before diving into every episode, Annette makes sure she acknowledges a mother gone too soon.
Later, she dispels common myths people have about birthing at home and shares intimate and funny insight into learning she was pregnant with her son and deciding, after being a doula for 4 years, to forgo having him inside of a hospital.
As the youngest of three, you would think Annette’s family would be used to her going against the grain, but even they were surprised and worried about her having a home birth.
But that’s all we’ll share for now. You’ll have to tune in to hear how her own birth went and to decide if home birth is right for you.

Quick Facts: Birth after Cesarean
After a cesarean, most women have two choices for future births: a vaginal birth after cesarean
(VBAC) or a repeat cesarean section (RCS).
There is a lot of misinformation about these two options. Let’s review some quick facts compiled by Jennifer Kamel, Founder of VBAC Facts.
