The CodeX Cantina

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! We return to our favorite short story collection: Dubliners! Let's talk about another of James Joyce's masterpieces which is "A Painful Case." Whether you're reading this in a box or comparing themes of paralysis and loneliness with other stories in this collection, this is a great piece to break down. Mr. Duffy is a great character and maybe even has foils in others characters in this collection.

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! From the short story collection of the same title, we look at "Toddler-Hunting" today which can be a very polarizing text. With themes that explore very sensitive subjects and how our inner fantasies can become reality, we have a hot discussion today! Our copy was translated by Lucy North.

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! We look at one of the 20th century's masterpieces, "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck. Written from 1948-1952, this piece is an amazing novel. It's fluid, simple: yet complex and challenging at the same time. If you are looking for a great place to start reading classic literature, this might be the best place to start with classics. It tackles a core idea of what makes us good or evil? What is free will and do we recognize it or influence others in our choices?

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! We are celebrating #WomenInTranslationMonth with Clarice Lispector! We continue to explore her Family Ties collection, today let's look at "A Chicken" (Sometimes translated as "The Chicken" or "The Hen") which is frequently recommended to people as one of Clarice's best stories. It has themes of freedom, utility, and perhaps an interpretation of women's role in society. Our copy was translated by Katrina Dodson.

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! We are back with another Yoko Ogawa story as we celebrate Women in Translation Month! Today we look at "The Tale of the House of Physics" which we got from the Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories and was edited by Ted Goossen. It's Women in Translation Month for August. This is a great story that seemed to really celebrate the role of the editor in the publication process as well as highlight the vulnerability writers experience. We really enjoyed this story, what did you guys think?

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Flannery O'Connor's first novel, "Wise Blood", was a 97-page gut punch. We were so impressed with its themes of redemption, religion, and nihilism. I'm sure we all want to know what does the ending of Wise Blood mean? Let's talk about that and more today as we analyze and discuss this masterpiece of literature!

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! August is #WomeninTranslation month and today we head to Japan to look at Yuko Tsushima's "A Very Strange, Enchanted Boy" which came to us via the Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories. An interesting tale about infinity, identity, and needs of a child against the needs of an adult.
