The CodeX Cantina

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! One of the most complex stories we've ever read: The Garden of Forking Paths by Jorge Luis Borges was mind-blowing! Let's talk about the usages of metafiction in this post-modernist work. The complications of blurred lines and hyper-accelerated scenes only help to confuse and disorient the reader in a good way. Our version was translated by Helen Temple and Ruthven Todd.

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Let's look at "Clay" by James Joyce today. From the legendary collection "Dubliners", this is a part of the maturity section. A place where Joyce was exploring the different people of Dublin: their beliefs, their happiness, and more. Let's talk about Hallow's Eve as well as barmbrack and the saucer game in this story today.

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Today we look at "Cat in the Rain" by Ernest Hemingway. One of his most popular short stories from "In Our Time." Perhaps there are symbols of motherhood, maturity, and communication in this piece. Perhaps it's just a cat in the rain and a tired husband? What do you guys think?

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Let's talk about "The Way Up To Heaven" by Roald Dahl. An extremely popular story to assign to students. Let's talk about some subtle foreshadowing in the story and what makes this twist so interesting! Is the way to heaven paved with good intentions?

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! We are working through "The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories" and today we are looking at "Bee Honey" by Banana Yoshimoto (よしもと ばななor 吉本 ばなな which is the pen name of Mahoko Yoshimoto (吉本 真秀子)). Lots of themes of loss, soothing, and motherhood in this one. But it's all open to interpretation. What did you guys think of this story?

Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! This week we talk about the Southern Gothic class, "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. Ask a professor what's the best place to start with Faulkner and you maybe this story. This piece has a lot of the Old South vs New South and Southern Belle Tropes as seen in many of Faulkner's work. The most fascinating part is the ending. I'm sure we all want the ending explained. Let's chat about it a bit today!
