The Collected Edition episodes

  • Collected Edition: Episode 13: Phonogram: Rue Britannia
    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

On this episode we discuss Phonogram written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Jamie McKelvie. This comic is a multi-layered musical extravaganza that focuses on BritPop, magic and the power of nostalgia. It proves to be an interesting discussion that brings up many diverse concepts and ideas.

Also, we typically talk about some comic news but today we deviate from that a little bit because as we record this Christmas is right around the corner and in addition to that Star Wars the Last Jedi has just been released in theaters so to celebrate that we have decided to talk about the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. Wow, its a thing to behold.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

    • Collected Edition: Episode 12: Thor Vol. 1

On this episode we discuss, Thor by Walter Simonson Vol. 1. Rarely in comic book history does a creator leave their unique and influential mark on a character quite as profoundly as Walter Simonson did with Thor. You cannot speak about the character of Thor in Marvel comics without also mentioning in the same breath the name of Walt Simonson. He did not create this character but he took him to heights he had never reached before. This is really good.

We also discuss the recent firing of Axel Alonso at Marvel and will this be a good thing or a bad thing.

      • Collected Edition: Episode 11: Gotham Central Vol. 1

On this episode we discuss, Gotham Central the fantastic (spoilers?) procedural series set in Gotham City of Batman fame.  Released by DC Comics this seminal work was written by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka and drawn by Michael lark.

Also on the program we discuss in excruciating detail the news of the move/defection of Brian Michael Bendis from Marvel to DC. How will this impact the state of comic industry and will it in fact end the world? Probably not. But he’ll most likely get Batman right?

        • Collected Edition: Episode 10: Tomb of Dracula Vol.2
          Happy Halloween everyone!

On this episode we discuss, in honor of the greatest holiday invented by man, we discuss the classic 70s Marvel comic Tomb of Dracula. Volume 2 to be precise. This is written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by Gene Colan and is – depending on you level of nostalgia – either a wonderful work of chilling beauty or a long-winded bit of purple prose and flowery fluff. no matter which way your opinions fall there is no  doubt that it is interesting.

Also on the program we discuss the very real and deeply disturbing problem that is dividing the nation…the issue of how comic are numbered. With the release of Marvel Legacy and the return (for now) of the “original” numbering scheme how does one begin to organize their longboxes? It is a topic that needs an answer. Nay! it demands one. Yeah, so…we talk about it.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

          • Collected Edition: Episode 9: Terminal City

On this episode we discuss Terminal City – the acclaimed Eisner winning comic written by Dean Motter and illustrated by Michael Lark. Originally published by Vertigo in 1996/1997 in two limited runs or 9 and 5 issues respectively. We however are reading from the Dark Horse re-release The Compleat Terminal City published in 2012. We are a little behind schedule this time around but that’s because Brian went off and decided to “have a life” and not record a podcast. The nerve of some people. But we’re back and talking about a truly exceptional comic.

Also on the program we will briefly chat about the trailers for Black Panther, The New Mutants and Justice League. Talking about trailers is not something we normally do but these are interesting enough that we figured its worth a mention.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

            • Collected Edition: Episode 8: Blade Runner & Do Androids Dream…

On this episode we have a theme! Yes, its our first themed episode in anticipation of the upcoming release Blade Runner 2049 we have a Blade Runner-centric episode. Starting off the program we talk a bit about the original movie and the mistaken belief that Deckard is a replicant before diving into the 1982 official comic book adaptation of the movie written by  Archie Goodwin with art by Al Williamson. This Marvel “super special” ran for two issues and its quality was…questionable.

But in addition to that our main topic will be the 2009 adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel that the movie was based on: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? This is a 24 issues, incredibly faithful comic from BOOM! Studios with art by Tony Parker that was released in 2009.

Also on the program we talk briefly about the death of Len Wein and his legacy and impact on comics.

So join us – Paul Matthew Carr and Brian K. Reese – for a lively and rambling and hopefully entertaining discussion on comics and comic related material.

            • Collected Edition: Episode 7: Teen Titans: The Judas Contract
The long lost episode is here!

On this episode we discuss the iconic story arc The Judas Contract from Tales of the New Teen Titans. This is the beloved story written by Marv Wolfman with art by George Pérez. This really is an important run that has had an influence on modern comic storytelling and helped to usher in a new era of comics in general.

Also on the program we talk briefly about our childhood favorite characters and we reminisce with nostalgic glee on the joys of getting mail. There is a possibility we may be old.

Note on the production: this episode was fraught with problems in the recording with wifi failures, construction noises and dogs howling. There were multiple interruptions and it seemed as if fate was telling us that this didn’t want to get done. It was a Herculean effort to clean this up and get it presentable for release, so thank you listeners for you patience. It took a while but I just wanted this to be acceptable and pleasant to listen to. Again, thanks.

              • Collected Edition: Episode 6: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man: Vol2: Scorpion

On this episode we discuss the acclaimed series Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Vol. 2: Scorpion written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Chris Samee and Sara Pichelli. This is the first time Brian has read any Miles Morales stories and with his … let’s say aversion…to Bendis’ writing style this leads to some lively conversation about how a story can and should be told.

Also on the program we have a rambling discussion of the newly released Netflix series The Defenders. We both really liked the program though you might not be able to tell with how we actually talk about it. And we discuss the possibility of a new Joker origin film produced by Martin Scorsese. Is this really necessary? Spoilers: no.

              • Collected Edition: Episode 5: Scalped

On this episode we discuss the acclaimed series Scalped Vol. 1 by Jason Aaron and RM Guera published by Vertigo. This is an incredibly complex and dense comic book series that deals with issues of violence, sexuality, crime, drug addiction, and identity. We do our best to touch on all those things while at the same time discussing the writing style and artwork and the importance of this series in comics history.

Also on the program we have a rousing discussion of the newly announced series The Terrifics from DC and ask the question: Is DC just trolling Marvel now? We also talk about the upcoming Doomsday Clock crossover from DC and if the Watchmen characters can  work in mainstream continuity.  This leads to a … lively conversation. Spoiler: we do not agree on that subject.

              • Collected Edition: Episode 4: Wonder Woman: Blood

On this episode we discuss Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Blood the celebrated run by Brian Azzarello with art by Cliff Chiang. We discuss the art and writing of course as well as Wonder Woman as a iconic character, Greek mythology, and the minor controversy associated with this particular run.

Also on the program we discuss the possible Flashpoint movie and if this is a way for the DCEU to reboot the movie franchise while still keeping the (relatively few) good bits in the current incarnation. We also get sidetracked with sundry topics and go off on tangents. You know…like we do.
