Here is the poem Sam Kee wrote and read for episode 19 “Non-Dual Polarities.” The poem is based on Ruth 2-3.
Forbidden Places
She dared to breach the vanguards
Of the tall golden garden
Not content with just the corners
She moved away from edge
Closer than the others
Not content to glean the crumbs from table
Closer still
Until she reached the hem of garments
Reached deep into the handfuls
Caught their ears
Whispered her need with tattooed tongue
When he saw her near
His heart went into exile
He commanded harvestmen to let her in
Do not swat her back or shame her creeping
Though you’ve worked the heat of day
And she arrived at the eleventh hour
She is bidden into the forbidden
She risks their scorn
And their blows
Where else is she to go?
The harvest waits in places forbidden
Where nobody dares to enter
The place they said was off limits your whole life
There you feed on roasted grain
To Pray is to glean
At night she leaves the safety of the gates
Goes down into the valley
Risking her assault
She goes to the forbidden place once more
Not the fields
But threshing floor
The man sleeps between animal parts
Surrounded by prostitutes and hungry men
She places herself at his feet
Uncovers both covenant and desire
Can they keep the fire?
Oh, Boaz!
She comes for you
In the cool of the night
You lie in the dark
Near Demeter’s golden mound
She knocks
She bids
Will you open up the door?
Why have you tarried?
Can you smell her olive oil now
Smeared like holy blood on her breasts
She is at your feet
Will you bring her to your ribs?
She has a secret
Whispered into her ear by jilted Tamar
And Lot’s lonely daughters
Who had the law, but not love
Oh, Faithful Friend!
Your first husband Adam may be dead
But there is another
And you must sin boldly upon his grace
And take what’s been given lawfully to another
The Bitter One
Be like that pleader, Moses
And that trickster, Jacob
Who put on new clothes
Under the guise of the elder’s scent
Sent by his mother after meal and drink
Beneath the blindness of the night
To the bearer of blessing
Put your hand on the pillar
Rebuild your shaken house
—And a house will be built for the world
