The Comedian's Comedian Podcast

• how her family taught her not to accept failure
• the need to debate why something is funny
• why all clowns should do stand-up first
• how we get agency from turning what hurts into art
• and we find out if Elf is happy…

Welcome back for another ComCompendoum, this time with Stevie Martin where we discuss:

• the huge amount of time and prep that goes into her work
• the internal battle to feel like a “proper comedian” in an industry that prioritises certain styles, backgrounds and looks.
• her brilliant former sketch outfit Massive Dad and whether their aesthetic made them “unapproachable” as performers
• the relative loneliness of stand-up
• and trying to love Edinburgh in the way that it deserves to be loved

Some people have been in Edinburgh all month long... well, the cool kids are now finally in town! Starting today, I'll be at Monkey Barrel Comedy's Cabaret Voltaire everyday at 2.25pm until 30th August.

Although it's about the climate, this show isn't bleak! I tackle our hypocrisy, the barefaced lies of big oil companies, and the things we tell ourselves to cope with it all.

It's consistently hilarious (as evidenced below*, don't just take my word for it), and will leave you motivated and full of fierce joy!

*The TImes: "The funny side of climate change… No, really!"

LIVE DATES

Edinburgh | 17th to 30th August

Cambridge | 3rd September

Glasgow | 16th September

Oxford | 20th September

Manchester | 2nd October

Cardiff | 9th October

Maidenhead | 16th October

Sheffield | 6th November

Birmingham | 13th November

PLUS, the biggest headline show of my career...

Bristol Old Vic | 18th November

Tickets now on sale at stuartgoldsmith.com/comedy.

I'm really proud of it, and can't wait to take it out on the road (sustainably of course). Hopefully see you there!

• and is Nish Kumar happy...

You know him. I know him. Nish Kumar (Pod Save The UK, The Mash Report and in his own words, one of Taskmaster’s greatest losers) returns for his third appearance on the show ahead of embarking on his new tour, Nish Kumar: Angry Humour From a Really Nice Guy. In the first part of this special, we discuss:

• how Bridget Christie, The Mash Report and Taskmaster all gave him permission to be both serious and goofy on stage
• Nish's "candy floss" approach to building a show
• how explaining references for international audiences creates new joke opportunities
• the practical nightmare of reworking one show into wildly different running times
• the difficulty of writing jokes when you can't gauge what an audience already knows
• and how a diagnosis can reshape your understanding of yourself

Chances are you’re already familiar with Kristen Schaal's work. You've seen her in What We Do in the Shadows, The Last Man on Earth, The Muppets, Bill & Ted Face the Music, My Spy, The Boss and A Walk in the Woods. And as a voice actor, you’ve heard her as Louise Belcher in Bob's Burgers, alongside memorable roles in Toy Story, Gravity Falls, and BoJack Horseman.

Kristen now comes to the UK with The Legend Of Crystal Shell, a show about an extraordinary soul who has been hiding from the world because of a fantastic secret. She now prepares to execute her long-held dream: a solo dance interpretation of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. We discuss:

• returning to Edinburgh after 10 years with changing audiences
• what it was like working with The Muppets
• pretending to bomb on stage in Live At The Fillmore, and Comedy Central's reluctance to air it
• playing with how much trust an audience will extend to a performer
• voicing Louise on Bob's Burgers, one of the only animated shows where the cast still gets in a room together
• the struggle to get projects off the ground
• and we find out Kristen Schaal is happy…

Join the Insiders Club at Patreon.com/ComComPod where you can instantly WATCH the full episode and get access to exclusive extras where we discuss committing to the bit, doing the thing that scares you most even if it doesn't land and the freedom in only being able to control what you did, not how it's received.

Bilal Zafar is an award-winning stand-up comedian who first broke through with a lastminute.com Best Newcomer Award for his debut show, CAKES. He’s now back with Rubicon, a multimedia, interactive hour with games, prizes and stories, promising a genuinely life-changing experience.

Bilal has appeared on screen in Catastrophe, Sick of It and Paul Feig's Last Christmas and to many people, he’s known best as a full-time football manager embroiled in scandal on his hugely popular Twitch channel. We discuss:

• diving headfirst into football management through Twitch in lockdown on Limmy's advice and building an audience through him
• the challenge of sustaining momentum after his 2016 best newcomer nomination, and carrying that history into this year's Fringe
• and touring his debut show Cakes, and filming it for YouTube years later when he had the resources to do so
• finding unexpected happiness in a new career
• and developing new show Rubicon with Nick Helm, and being pushed to play a more arrogant, less "nice" version of himself
