This week on The Commentary Booth Jamie is joined by a very special guest, this person is an instantly recognisable Australian television and film actress. This person was the first Aboriginal actress to win the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, & has gone on to win four more AFI Awards across television and film. She is best known for roles in Rabbit-Proof Fence, Bran Nue Dae, The Sapphires & now the ABC drama series Total Control.

Before we throw it over to our interview with Deborah Mailman, let me first take this time to describe the show we're here to discuss today, Total Control.

Total Control is an ABC political drama series that follows Alex Irving (played by Deborah Mailman), an Indigenous woman who gets pulled into the high-stakes world of Australian politics.

Season 3 returns two years after the explosive events of the second season, with outsider turned kingmaker, Alex Irving, feeling completely at home in the nation’s capital. But what she’s about to discover will test her like never before. Can Alex achieve the change she’s been fighting for or will it cost her everything?

Starring two titans of Australian screen Deborah Mailman & Rachel Griffiths, ABC’s prestigious and razor-sharp political drama Total Control makes its final return with more powerplays, betrayals and soul-searching from Sunday, January 14 at 8.30 pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

To close out 2023 we're going to start a new annual tradition for The Commentary Booth with our first-ever Fantasy Movie Draft.

The way this game will work is competitors will each draft the movies they think will be the best of 2024. The year will be split into 2 halves, so we'll be drafting films releasing between January 1 & June 30 2024. We will then return in July to tally up the scores at the halfway mark & draft films from the remainder of the year.

THE RULES

Each competitor will be drafting 6 main roster films with 2 bench players. The bench players will only substitute into your scoring lineup if a main roster film fails to release in the allocated 6-month window.

Scoring will be based on the Metacritic Metascore

- For every point above 60, a will score 1 point

- For every point below 60, a film will lose 1 point

- If a film fails to release that film will score a 0

Films that perform exceptionally well or exceptionally poorly will be awarded bonus points

- For every point above 80, a film will receive 2 points

- For every point below 40, a film will lose 2 points

So the maximum scores a film could receive are: -100 or +80.

Released in 1971 & starring Gene Wilder as the titular candyman, Willy Wonka, this musical fantasy film is based on the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The story follows a poor child named Charlie Bucket who, upon finding a Golden Ticket in a chocolate bar, wins the chance to visit Willy Wonka's chocolate factory along with four other children from around the world.

Directed by Kitty Green The Royal Hotel takes inspiration from the the 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie by Pete Gleeson.
