International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on August 29 to increase awareness and to educate the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation to achieve the goal of a nuclear weapon free world.

National Sports Day in India is celebrated on the same day to mark the birthday of India's legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand Singh. He won gold medals for India in Oympics in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936.
