This week, Craig talks to David Patrick, author of recently published book Front-Page Scotland which looks at how stories about Scottish independence were reported in the newspapers throughout the 2014 independence referendum campaign. They discuss how the framing of stories on topics such as economics depended largely on whether the points favoured one side of the campaign or the other, which topics were given a disproportionate amount of time in coverage and which people and personalities saw more coverage than others. Finally, they discuss lessons to be learned from the last campaign that could be applied now such as how activists can better examine news stories to assess if the issues are being reported fairly.

This week, Craig speaks to Peter Ryan - expert on currency and banking systems and author of several papers for Common Weal and the Scottish Independence Convention on currency in an independent Scotland. They discuss recent radical changes to the global currency landscape with the creation of Central Bank Digital Currencies. These could potentially allow Central Banks to create money in the event of a future stimulus programme such as was needed in the wake of the Covid pandemic or the 2008 Financial Crisis but could do so in a way that means giving it directly to people rather than pumping up assets via Quantitative Easing and could allow Central Banks to avoid losing control of monetary policy due to the rise of cryptocurrencies or private digital currencies such as Facebook's Libra. Peter also discusses some of the risks of this policy such as the potential for the direct collection and control of data on what we buy and sell using our CBDC funds.

Finally, Peter talks about his work in the Scottish Green Party to bring forward a conference motion on a Financial Health Service.

They discuss the current patchwork state of child and early years care in Scotland, how the latest Programme for Government perpetuates that even if the policies themselves may be valuable and how things could be greatly improved by a strategic and holistic plan for care sitting within a National Care Service.

Ellen has campaigned for several years both for "New Scots" to be included in Scotland's democracy both through being able to vote - which they now can - but also for them to be better included in data that informs democratic campaigning. They discuss the current weaknesses in the data we have and how that has given rise to misconceptions about the voting intentions of New Scots. They then talk more broadly about the findings of Craig's latest policy paper that examines who has shifted from No to Yes since 2014 or vice versa.
