It’s true that connection is something that we all long for. But why is it often that we struggle the most to connect with those closest to us?
If the above is something that you can relate to, you are not alone and we are so glad you are at the Commons today.
This episode is the first of a series of episodes that we are releasing this month to help our community dig deeper into finding true, lasting, and beautiful connections with those in our lives.
We are starting off closest to home: Finding true connection with our spouses and kids.
It has been said that if we want to change the world, we must first start with our families. In order to impact our families, we must learn how to connect with them. Our hope is that through this episode and the resources we share, you find the encouragement you need to begin connecting deeper with those closest to you.

Today is a FIRST for The Commons. We have our first man and teenager on the podcast! I am here with my husband Chad and my daughter Sophia. If you have been following the podcast, you know that we talk a lot about friendship and connection. I have found there has been a common theme in recent episodes - family connections. So I thought, what better time to talk with my family about what that looks like in our household. In this episode we talk about our family values, family meetings, my husband’s life since retiring, Sophia and her phone, and much more! I enjoyed having this authentic conversation with my family, and I hope you do too! Listen to this episode to get a glimpse into my day to day life.

We have so many conversations a day, but how many of those conversations do we truly commit to digging deeper than surface level?
So often we participate in conversations with the intention of responding with our own feelings or with the intention of cutting the conversation short to get back to our busy lives. In this episode, Maggie challenges us to dig deeper. She talks about how her conversations, and consequently her relationships, shifted when she started to truly be intentional about listening to what someone is really saying. I think this is a lesson that we can all use. Listen to this episode to find encouragement to take your connections with others to the next level.

There is always a sense of relief when you have a friend or companion that has shared the same struggles as you and is able to relate with your feelings and emotions. There is comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Today’s conversation is with one of the most loyal women I know, my dear friend Shelley. Shelley has been through a lot in her life, all of which has inspired her to be loving and compassionate towards others. Shelley is passionate about working with teen girls who have emotional and behavioral issues. She uses her own personal, past experiences and struggles to help relate to others who may be feeling the same things that she once did. She also has a heart to help people with addiction, people struggling with mental health issues, as well as the homeless. Her empathy for others is truly inspiring. Check out this episode to learn more about Shelley and her story.

Life is full of hard and challenging times.
One of the most important things to have during these seasons is community to support you, guide you, and sometimes just listen to you. Today we are talking with Lindsay, who four days postpartum with her third child discovered she had a brain tumor that led to a cancer diagnosis. Lindsay tells us how much her community really stepped up, quickly, for her and her family in her time of need. If you are walking through a challenging time right now, I hope this episode can bring you encouragement. If you are not, I hope that it will lead you to reach out to someone who is going through a tough time, and just be there for them. Listen to this episode and I am sure that you will be amazed with Lindsay’s story, just like I was.

Do you have friends that you consider family?
Today we are talking with Laurie about how to be intentional when it comes to maintaining connection with family and friends during life's crazy seasons. Laurie is a wife, mother, and school counselor. Although it would be easy to make excuses to put off other relationships, Laurie and her husband make time to hold get-togethers at their house, and put effort into their connections with others. Although Laurie wishes that she had a color coded calendar to schedule get-togethers, it often looks like just reaching out to someone who is on her heart. She is committed to doing life with people around her. Check out this episode to hear Laurie’s story, and how she prioritizes relationships with her family and friends.

Have you ever felt distracted?
I think we can all agree that in today’s society - it is SO easy to get distracted from the things that are really important to us in our life. One of the main distractions that comes to mind is Social Media. In our world, Social Media has taken over many of our lives. In this Episode, we are speaking with my podcast manager, Bethany. Bethany tells us how she and her family used a social media hiatus to move them closer to fulfilling their life purpose and gain connection. Social Media has many positive aspects, however it sometimes can lead to surface level friendships. Nothing can really replace that special feeling of meeting up with a friend face-to-face over a cup of coffee. Check out this episode to see how taking a break from social media helped Bethany improve her relationship with others and herself.
