Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity.

Autism spectrum disorder includes conditions that were previously considered separate — autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and an unspecified form of pervasive developmental disorder. Some people still use the term "Asperger's syndrome," which is generally thought to be at the mild end of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society — socially, in school and at work, for example. Often children show symptoms of autism within the first year. A small number of children appear to develop normally in the first year, and then go through a period of regression between 18 and 24 months of age when they develop autism symptoms.

While there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, intensive, early treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children

Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show developmental differences when they are babies—especially in their social and language skills. Because they usually sit, crawl, and walk on time, less obvious differences in the development of body gestures, pretend play, and social language often go unnoticed.

In addition to speech/language delays and behavioral differences, families may notice differences in the way their child interacts with peers and others.

A true Mobilian and servant to his community, Councilman Cory Penn is passionate about helping to improve the quality of life for area youth. A 2002 graduate of John L. LeFlore High School, Penn was president of the school’s Student Government Association.   Penn is also a graduate of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He became an educator and taught special needs students at Chastang Middle School in Trinity Gardens. During his tenure at the school, he co-founded the Chastang Elite Service Club which is designed to help young boys discover their purpose and give them the skills to have a successful life.  Penn is currently the unit director at Kiwanis Boys and Girls where he teaches good character and leadership skills. He also shares the importance of sustaining meaningful relationships with others and developing a positive self-image. He is a minister at Right Way Christian Center Church. His true desire is to help individuals fully grow into their potential. He is a family man who puts his faith into action. A member of Leadership Mobile Class of 2021, Penn is also a member of the board of directors at Mobile Community Action Inc.  Penn always stands ready to help his family, friends and community.
