January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. The GO Teal and White campaign aims to spread awareness about cervical cancer prevention through early detection, regular screenings and HPV vaccination.

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, plan to wear teal and white to raise awareness about cervical cancer. The RSA buildings in Mobile and Montgomery will be lit in teal and white to commemorate the day.

The Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who meet eligibility guidelines. Go Doc Go provides kits for at-home testing for HPV, the human papillomavirus.

Eight out of 10 adults will get HPV in their lifetime. The HPV vaccine, which prevents six different cancers in men and women, is recommended for boys and girls ages 9 to 12 with catchup through age 26. Adults up to age 45 may get the vaccine as recommended by their doctor.

On Jan. 13, 2022, Jennifer Young Pierce, M.D., M.P.H., will deliver a talk about cervical cancer at 6 p.m. at Old Majestic Brewing Co. in downtown Mobile. Dr. Eichold provides message on COVID-19 surge

MOBILE, Ala. — Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, Health Officer for Mobile County, would like to share this

information to the community regarding COVID-19.

“Some sites in Mobile County have reported community transmission test rate at around 50 percent positive.

MCHD tested almost 4,000 people last week, which had a 30 percent positivity rate. Five percent or less is

an accepted national threshold.

“Omicron is the predominant variant, representing approximately 80 percent of the positive cases.

Obviously, Omicron is highly contagious.

“With this increased community transmission rate, MCHD recommends that anyone over the age of 2 --

regardless of their own vaccine status – wear a mask in the public, maintain social distancing and frequently

washing of hands for the next several weeks. Large gatherings should be avoided.

“If you have not done so, please get vaccinated. And if you are eligible, please get the booster shot. As we

have broken the community transmission three times in the past, let’s all work together for the next several

weeks to again have success.”

***In response to the recent increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases, the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is making changes to its services.

Family Health, the primary care division of MCHD, is temporarily closing its Dauphin Island Parkway Health Center at 2601 Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile. Medical services will be moved to other Family Health locations. To make an appointment, please call 251-690-8889.

MCHD’s COVID-19 Response Team is cancelling all previously announced outreach events planned for January. Efforts will be focused on providing vaccinations and testing at the Festival Centre location (Suite 101-A) at the corner of Airport Boulevard and Montlimar Avenue in Mobile. Starting this week, the hours at the Festival Centre for Monday through Friday are extended from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both services remain available on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

C. J. Small is the President of the Mobile City Council and is a native and resident of Mobile, AL. He is 1997 graduate of John S. Shaw High School and an active and dedicated member of the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, where he serves as a Church Trustee, Sunday School Musician and Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Teachers. He received his Associates degree in Funeral Services from Gupton-Jones College in Atlanta, GA in 2000 and a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources from Faulkner University in Montgomery, AL in 2008.

He is the owner of Small's Mortuary & Cremations Services, serving the Alabama Gulf Coast with locations in Mobile, Theodore and Fairhope, AL. He is a member of the Alabama Funeral Director & Morticians Association where he is the District 1 Representative, a member of the National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, serves as Secretary of the Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity, a member of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, serves on the Board of Directors for Mobile Civic Center, City of Mobile Citizen's Budget & Finance Advisory Committee and Oakdale Community Service Club. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., where he was named 2011 'Kappa Man of the Year', a member of 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile and a member of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association where he was also King of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association in 2008. He is the Chaplain of the MLK Adult Mardi Gras Association, a Partner in Education with the Mobile Public School System and sponsors one of the largest toy drives in the City of Mobile during the Christmas holidays for less fortunate children.

Meet Dana Baker:

Here’s what makes me different:

I am a high school dropout. I finished the 10th grade and never went back. I took my GED and have some basic college.

20 years ago I stopped being a teachers aid at headstart and started breeding dogs. I worked at it and have worked on my grooming skills. I taught myself to groom. After about 13 years I started grooming professionally. I took a self pay online grooming course and groomed for a new pet store that shortly after closed due to their finances. When it closed I bought Kuddles n Kisses pet grooming in grand bay. At the time I was helping my mom take care of my dad that was dying. I financed that business and paid it off in 2 years. That was 8 years ago.

Since then I have meet some wonderful people. Dr Ann Branch. She is the authority on rabies for Mobile county. She has rabies clinics every weekend all over Mobile county. No appointment needed and it’s only $12. We will be trying to do this at the new location soon. We also do nail clinics with her at a couple locations. We are at B&B pet stop the last Saturday every other month starting in January. Half the nail cuts at B&B go to the shelter. Cut paws for a good cause!

Monday I paid cash for one of the oldest grooming businesses in Mobile. We take over ownership January 1. We will have 2 locations. Pampered pets in Mobile on Airport Blvd and our original location on hwy 188

What I would like to get across. It’s time for young adults to be thinking about their future and applying for colleges. College wasn’t for me. School wasn’t for me. I’m gonna take some classes on business and who know my get my associates but that will be to improve the businesses I have now. Think about a plan B. Think about trade school or apprenticeship. There are so many opportunities here in Mobile. Think outside the box and do what you love. If the service industry is your calling then be the best at it that you can possibly be and see just how much more successful you can be. I love my jobs. I have worked my way from generational poverty to being a business owner and not just one. It’s only 2 generations my family were share croppers. As long as you do what you love you’ll never work a day.
