Addressed to an Egyptian priest, the text questions the legitimacy of religious rites that claim to summon gods, demons, or other supernatural beings. Porphyry examines the theological foundations of these practices, asking how material rituals could influence divine forces and whether such claims are philosophically coherent. The work is an important source for understanding ancient debates on theurgy, magic, and rational religion within late antiquity.
