Science fiction, fantasy, and horror rarely get invited to the Academy Awards’ biggest table. The Oscars traditionally favor historical drama, biopics, and prestige filmmaking — not spaceships, monsters, magic, or multiverses.

But every once in a while, speculative fiction breaks through.
