The Conservation Conversation Ep. 11 - FISH FRAUD AND ILLEGAL FISHING

Fishing is one of the biggest businesses worldwide, considered the most traded commodity, it's a multi-trillion dollar business with almost zero legislation or enforcement.

120 billion fish are killed on commercial farms each year,

Today, more than 90 percent of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported, and less than 1 percent is inspected by the government specifically for fraud.

Snapper (87%) and tuna (59%) were the most commonly mislabeled fish types.

Today I share my experiences in the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, and discuss how fish fraud and fish market is leading to extinction, slavery, and disease. And I also share how my cancer became a sharpening stone for my life.

Plastic is so pervasive and in some ways unavoidable in today's world. We will take a look at plastic alternatives, plastic problems, and how we can change the world through our daily routine, acing as Eco Roombas.

With the global market for plastics weighing in at over 1.2 trillion dollars, no companies will change anything unless we demand they do.

We look at pollution levels, DISPR, and PVC.

What Plastic are we forced to live with? What can we change?

We examine international aspects and personal solutions to combatting the plastic wave.

I took a camera into a regular grocery store to see how much of a challenge it would be to shop plastic-free, and you'll be surprised at the result!

It's our world - let's talk about it!

Red Tide is back.

Is it naturally occurring as we see it? Or is it being fed by human pollution and toxic waste? What is the Army Corps doing to stop or help the problems? Lake O. Mosaic. Big Ag. Big Sugar. De-regulation. Many pieces to a puzzle that paints the picture of residents and animals getting sick from the water.

Red Tide and the Industrial and Agricultural runoff that feeds it is a topic that only gets talked about when it hits the news, but when there is not a big fish or mammal die-off visible, the topic goes out of sight, out of mind.

The bad side to that is the pollution, nutrient runoff, phosphate mining runoff, and other pollutants all continue even when we are not looking.

They feed the water issues, and this week we will discuss how our actions cause but also can stop the current This week's Conservation Conversation focuses on Florida's recent return of the red tide and how man-made pollutions are fueling it.

With Florida's waters under attack, we will speak with well known Florida Naturalist Colleen Marie and OG Clean Water Activist Kenny Hinkle Jr.

Colleen has been taking her camera to the beaches and investigating this year's water quality issues. Sadly there is no shortage of ways Florida's water, animals, and people are under attack by pollution and other man-made issues.

Kenny is well known in the world of water activism and conservation, serving on the Board of Directors for the Rivers Coalition, which represents 105 organizations on the Treasure Coast. He is the former President of the Indian Riverkeeper, and the co-founder of Bullsugar.org.
