What does toxic masculinity even mean? How does this manifest in our lives?
As an ongoing part of our series on mental health, we are going to break down the stigma around toxic masculinity, especially in the sports world. You’ll hear from trailblazers and athletes who have a lot in common, Jason Collins and Schuyler Bailar. Later on, you’ll hear from author and health educator, Ellen Friedrichs about how we can take action. Get connected with our guests from today’s episode to continue the conversation:
Jason Collins is a retired NBA player who came out as gay in 2013. The following year he signed with the Brooklyn Nets and became the first openly gay athlete to play in any of the four major U.S. men’s professional sports leagues –– Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), and National Hockey League (NHL).
Schuyler Bailar was first recruited by Harvard University to swim for the women’s team. After he transitioned during his gap year, he was also offered a place on the men’s team, which he accepted. He became the first openly transgender NCAA Division I swimmer as well as the first publicly documented NCAA D1 transgender man to compete as a man in any sport. Bailar is an LGBTQ rights activist and member of the NCAA Common Ground initiative, where he promotes inclusion in NCAA activities.
Ellen Friedrichs is a health educator based in New York City and holds a master’s in health and human sexuality education from New York University. She’s the author of, Good Sexual Citizenship: How to Create a (Sexually) Safer World and her workshops teach parents and educators how to talk to kids about sex, puberty, consent, sexual violence, gender, sexual orientation, and more.
