A huge cylindrical gasometer – the largest in the world at that time – located in the heart of the industrial center of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, developed a leak. On the morning of November 14, 1927, repairmen set out to look for it – with an open-flame blowlamp. The resulting explosion sent chunks of metal, some weighing more than 100 lbs, scattering over great distances, and the combined effects of air pressure and fire left a square mile of devastation. 28 people were killed and hundreds were injured.

The Graniteville train crash was an American rail disaster that occurred on January 6, 2005, in Graniteville, South Carolina. At roughly 2:40 am EST, two Norfolk Southern trains collided near the Avondale Mills plant in Graniteville. 9 people were killed and over 250 people were treated for toxic chlorine exposure. The accident was determined to be caused by a misaligned railroad switch.

The Sunshine rail disaster (also known as Braybrook) occurred on April 20, 1908 at the junction at Sunshine railway station when a Melbourne-bound train from Bendigo collided with the rear of a train from Ballarat. 44 people were killed and over 400 injured, almost all of them from the Ballarat train, as the Bendigo train was cushioned by its two locomotives.

The Cornfield Meet: Technology Disaster's Edition presents the Lake Peigneur Drilling Accident by Michele Sargent.

In 1980, Lake Peigneur was an unremarkable body of water. The freshwater lake covered 1300 acres of land and was only 11 feet deep. A small piece of land, Jefferson Island, was home to a beautiful botanical park. Deep beneath the lake there was a salt mine. This beautiful area changed dramatically on the early morning of November 21, 1980 when the largest man-made vortex sucked down everything it could.

The Harrow and Wealdstone rail crash was a three-train collision at Harrow and Wealdstone station in Wealdstone, Middlesex during the morning rush hour of 8 October 1952; 112 were killed and 340 injured; it remains the worst peacetime rail crash in the United Kingdom.

This is the Ashtabula Horror story that took place in Ohio on December 29th, 1876 killing 159 people when they faced fire and ice during a bridge collapse. It was the worst rail disaster until the Great Train Wreck of 1918 and still considered one of the worst ever in the United States.
