An Investigation into The New Testament Bible Whistleblower: From 3 perspectives * The Biblical Worldview * The Academic/Scholastic * The Urantia Book As Paul reminded Timothy, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is [therefore] useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness" (2 Tim. 3:16)--all Scripture, not just our "life verses." At the same time, the Westminster Confession properly reminds us that not everything in Scripture is equally plain or equally important. We have to interpret the more difficult passages in the light of clearer ones. Scripture interprets Scripture, and we learn the whole meaning of Scripture by studying its parts and its parts by learning the whole. You need the box-top and the puzzle-pieces. Science discovers the material world, religion evaluates it, and philosophy endeavors to interpret its meanings while co-ordinating the scientific material viewpoint with the religious spiritual concept. Last summer Paula Thompson and Christilyn Biek-Larson interviewed author and long-time student of The Urantia Book, Larry Mullins, on his thorough and revealing research in his book entitled, A History of The Urantia Papers; now in its 2nd edition. We explored some issues about the book's origin in greater depth, and made a special effort to answer all of the questions of callers.Larry answered or proposed many questions: Dr. Meredith Sprunger thought The Urantia Book was a hoax when he first saw it. What changed his mind?   What did Dr. Sprunger and his team of 11 ministers discover when they visited 533? What part did Dr. Lena Sadler play in the revelation? How did the first contact with celestial beings happen? What did Dr. Sadler learn when he hypnotized the sleeping subject?  How did the forum get started? How did the forum get involved in the process? What did the Sadlers do that triggered the first written manuscript? What prompted Dr. Sadler to test the celestial beings who were talking through the sleeping subject with difficult questions? Does anyone really know how the Urantia Papers were materialized?  Why was the original written manuscript destroyed?  Why were the original typed manuscripts destroyed after the type was set for the Urantia Book? Why did the revelators use so much human information? When did the Jesus Papers come through? How? Why were the revelators displeased with the forum? Was The Urantia Book intended for a later time? Do bullies have free rein in our churches? Who are the bullies? What is scapegoating? Is it possible to practice the mercy and forgiveness demanded by Gospel ethics while also protecting people from emotional and professional damage? These are some of the questions that Dr. Stephen Finlan will seek to answer this week on the Cosmic Citizen. We'll be looking for an ethic of behavior that is both spiritually valid and psychologically wise. In his book, Stephen seeks responses to bullying that are both “wise” and “harmless” (Matt 10:16), that do not leave people helpless against the cruelty of church bullies. Bullying has become a major concern in schools and workplaces, but the church sometimes lags behind the secular workplace in its ethics. Stephen Finlan was the pastor at Mathewson Street United Methodist Church in Providence, Rhode Island, for three years. He is now with the United Church of Christ. Dr. Finlan is the author of Problems with Atonement (2005) and e Family Metaphor in Jesus’ Teaching (2013), and the coeditor of eosis: Deication in Christian eology, Vol. 1 (2006). He taught at seminaries and universities from 1998 through 2011. Stephen taught theology and general Humanities at universities and seminaries for 13 years. He is interested in preaching the gospel and in discovering the transforming power of the Spirit. He holds a Ph.D. in Pauline Theology from University of Durham, and has been writing about Jesus, Paul, atonement, and theosis for many years. He has strongly held views on these subjects, but welcomes lively and varied debate from those who have other views. The triumph of Christianity over the philosophic religions and the mystery cults was due to: Organization. Paul was a great organizer and his successors kept up the pace he set.  Christianity was thoroughly Hellenized. It embraced the best in Greek philosophy as well as the cream of Hebrew theology.  But best of all, it contained a new and great ideal, the echo of the life bestowal of Jesus and the reflection of his message of salvation for all mankind.  Likewise did the next and later generations of Christian leaders make such further compromises with paganism that even the Roman emperor Constantine was won to the new religion. Wisely or unwisely, these early leaders of Christianity deliberately compromised the ideals of Jesus in an effort to save and further many of his ideas. And they were eminently successful. You shall not doubt that faith is the only requirement for eternal salvation. 3:5.9.4. Is faith—the supreme assertion of human thought—desirable? Then must the mind of man find itself in that troublesome predicament where it ever knows less than it can believe 3:5.10.5. Is the love of truth and the willingness to go wherever it leads, desirable? Then must man grow up in a world where error is present and falsehood always possible. 3:5.13.8. Is unselfishness—the spirit of self-forgetfulness—desirable? Then must mortal man live face to face with the incessant clamoring of an inescapable self for recognition and honor. Man could not dynamically choose the divine life if there were no self-life to forsake. Man could never lay saving hold on righteousness if there were no potential evil to exalt and differentiate the good by contrast. More than anything it brings the credibility of the conventional Christian version into question. And this is the highest anthropomorphism that man can ever conceive. 5:4.10.The Christian concept of God is an attempt to combine three separate teachings: 5:4.11.1. The Hebrew concept—God as a vindicator of moral values, a righteous God. 5:4.12.2. The Greek concept—God as a unifier, a God of wisdom. 5:4.13.3. Jesus' concept—God as a living friend, a loving Father, the divine presence. 5:4.14.   It must therefore be evident that composite Christian theology encounters great difficulty in attaining consistency. This difficulty is further aggravated by the fact that the doctrines of early Christianity were generally based on the personal religious experience of three different persons: Philo of Alexandria, Jesus of Nazareth, and Paul of Tarsus.
