This week we are featuring Charles L Olivea for the third show in our series on education. Charles Laurence Olivea is a veteran public school teacher of history, who has taught high school students in New Mexico and Connecticut for nearly 40 years. He feels strongly that most ideas about school reform miss the mark by a wide margin. Says Charles, "If you wish to solve any problem you must first address its causes, not merely its effects. The failure of educational reform is owing largely to an emphasis on the latter. Would-be reformers often place process over result, equate change with progress, make a "fetish" over innovation, ignore the best from traditional pedagogy, and confuse excellence with effort. In his view, these are some of the big pitfalls to avoid in instituting school reform. He further asserts that genuine school reform requires improvements in teachers, curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and administration. He also accentuates one fundamental core problem: reading comprehension, the foundation for any curriculum. Charles believes that a "school" consists of relationships between persons: mind-to-mind; heart-to-heart; and, soul-to-soul. And that everything else is secondary. Unless minds are engaged intelligently, nothing educational happens. School reformation must embrace this primary reality for there to be any sensible hope of real progress (transformation of meaning and value within and among the young). John Creger is an award winning veteran English teacher and classroom researcher at American High School in Fremont CA, where he continually seeks new ways to engage his students more deeply in learning. His urge for depth stems from dissatisfaction with shallow learning in his own high school years--from which he cannot recall one conversation with a teacher that mattered to him. In his late 20s he found proof of what he had felt all along, that this is no shallow universe. With renewed purpose, he went on to publish writings in five languages on three continents, and graduated with a new mission--to work with teenagers in the high school classroom. Throughout his classroom career John has helped his students find satisfying connections to the universe within and beyond themselves as they gain skills reading, writing, thinking, and conversing. John has synthesized a Model of Deepened Learning which is met by universal passion from students and teachers who encounter his Personal Creed Project, developed with sophomores early in his career. It is now being adapted in schools and colleges across North America. In honor of the Personal Creed Project, John was the 2001 recipient of the James Moffett Memorial Award for Teacher Research. He's been honored by former students in six editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, with San Jose State University’s Dorothy Wright Award for Outstanding High School Teachers, by National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers Award and colleagues twice nominated him for Teacher of the Year. He was a featured speaker at AEPL’s June 2011 conference and recently gave a keynote at the Urantia Fellowship’s International Conference. This week on the Cosmic Citizen we will be interviewing a long time Urantia student and retired Unity minister, Roy Healy. Our next couple of guests will be talking about their personal ministry to young people using inspired educational techniques. Roy is a wonderful example of someone who does this extremely well. He teaches his program, APEX (Achieving Professional Excellence) at an Alternative High School for kids at risk in British Columbia. He helps young people find their values and develop their own personal life philosophy. After Roy we will interview one of the featured speakers from our recent International Conference, an awarding winning teacher, John Creger. John developed a remarkable curriculum that helps young people develop their own personal creed, called the Personal Creed Project. We know you will be inspired by these two amazing men. But this week it's Roy. Roy Healy is an avid student of the Urantia Book who preached it from the pulpit in his Unity church and packed in 1200 people a week for years. He has great stories about his years in Pulpit Ministry and his time at Unity Village in MO. He will give us some background on the Unity and New Thought movement and the connections between Unity and The Urantia Book may well surprise you. When Roy retired, after 40 years in public ministry, he began to teach. Which we know is really just another form of service ministry. Roy says this about APEX, "This program is a result of a pattern of synchronistic events that I was steered to, lead through and guided by the spiritual forces in my life. When I explain it, with the help The Urantia Book, people immediately "get it."  I can explain the concept of "Synchronicity," through these experiences.
