The Cost of Starting a Trucking Company

Listen Later

Are you a company driver looking to boost your income and gain more independence? Transitioning to an owner-operator may be the solution you're after. But before you take the plunge, it's important to consider the costs of starting your own trucking company. This article outlines the different expenses you should expect to face, so you can make informed decisions about your future. Keep in mind that costs can vary widely depending on your specific situation.

Are you eager to launch a trucking company but not sure where to start? First things first: you'll need a CDL (Commercial Drivers License). If you don't already have one, you'll need to enroll in a CDL training course, pass a written exam, obtain a CDL permit, log training hours with a supervisor, complete all required training, and pass a skills test. Once you've completed these steps, you'll have your CDL in hand. The cost of CDL training varies by state, so do your research ahead of time. You may want to have Broker Authority instead of driving the trucks.

Next up, you'll need a USDOT and MC number. These two numbers are required for anyone operating a trucking company in the US. The USDOT number is for carriers operating in interstate commerce, while an MC number identifies carriers that transport regulated goods across state lines. You can apply for both online with the FMCSA for $300. Your application will require information on your company's operation, cargo classification, and vehicle types. Approval can take up to six weeks, so make sure to plan accordingly especially if you origin in California.

Finally, you'll need a truck. You can either purchase or lease your own vehicle. When you buy a truck, you'll own it outright once you've paid it off. Monthly payments will be required until the vehicle is fully funded. With these steps complete, you're ready to hit the open road and take your trucking business to the next level with a drug and alcohol program cost.

We offer full trucking authority packages to make the launching of your trucking company business go more smoothly. The Department of Transportation regulates safety so doing it right in the begging is very important.
