EP 116: YouTube and Your Student
Today on The Couch Time Podcast Ryan and Josh talk about THE most popular internet site/app for students: YouTube!
Things parents can do to allow students to have freedom and enjoy YouTube while also keeping them safe and not wasting too much time.
Here are 10 quick things you can do…
*Important point: It's hard to have absolute control/monitoring on YouTube.
--> Kids can switch accounts, switch browsers
1. Talk and watch - obvious but important. Talk to your kids and watch with them. The thing about YouTube is that most people and kids like to share.
2. Turn on restricted mode - hides comments, filters some bad content (though not all of it)
3. Subscriptions are helpful - gives you a focused list instead of a never ending worm hole of watching.
5. Delete app from phone.
6. I recommend no devices in bedroom at night for students.
How do we redeem YouTube?
1. There are some AWESOME channels out there!
2. Watch things together on youtube - disc golf, civil war, documentaries...
3. YouTube is FUN and thats good! YouTube can be funny and thats good - can be a great place to learn.
4. Cool to see creativity on YouTube of content creators.
