Achieve Financial Alignment with Judi Otton |
To say we’re in a time of change would be an understatement—perhaps the understatement of the year.
The pandemic has had—and continues to have—comprehensive effects on our lives, including our economic lives. Business owners have been especially hard hit, which may not be surprising to you.
After all, even in good times, running a successful business is tough business. Consider that in any given year, an estimated 600,000 businesses close—and that’s in the US alone. So what happened as a result of the pandemic? Well, an April, 2021 survey by the Federal Reserve found that an additional 200,000 US businesses permanently closed during the first year of the pandemic.
That rate of closure is about a quarter to a third above normal, which is more than enough to lose sleep over. And we’re all about preventing sleep problems here on The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast! And so we bring you the fifth installment of our Quarter 4 Business Impact Series.
We feature the best of the best in corporate leadership—the thought leaders and the innovators—the ones the CEOs call when they need help. Whether you’re the CEO of a multinational corporation or the CEO of your family, each episode gives you what you need so you can get the sleep you need for success in life, love and leadership. You get the insights and solutions you need now to have success in 2022—and beyond.

  • TCSP 44 -- Leverage Your Board's Power with Julie Garland McLellan
Leverage Your Board's Power with Julie Garland McLellan --
We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s lonely at the top” and that’s true for CEOs, too.
According to research by the Harvard Business Review, half of CEOs struggle with feelings of isolation. And of those, a whopping 61% feel it’s hurting their job performance. After all, having a trusted sounding board is critical to success in just about any role.
So wouldn’t it make sense to have some built in support for CEOs?
As it turns out, there is built in support for CEOs. It’s called the Board of Directors. But here’s the surprising thing: In a survey of over 400 CEOs in 11 countries, only 28% of CEOs said they turned to their Board of directors for honest feedback. Not even one-third of CEOs turned to their Board of Directors for guidance…and that was back in 2018.
Since then, the shifting landscape of pandemic conditions has only increased the complexity and volatility of, well, everything. That, in turn, increases the chances of
the healthy tension between CEOs and their Boards degrading into an unhealthy friction—and that’s just one more thing to keep CEOs up at night. And if you’re a regular listener of The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, you know that sleep performance problems are the death knell for performance, period.
And so in this episode of our Business Impact Series we talk with Julie Garland McLellan about how to leverage the power of your Board of Directors. Julie is a professional company director and corporate governance consultant who provides the behind the scenes guidance that has helped many boards, CEOs and chairmen turn difficult situations into successful outcomes. She is the author six books on governance and writes the powerful newsletter called the "Director's Dilemma.”
What I love about the insights Julie shares in this conversation is this: We focus on the relationship between CEOs and their Boards, but there are concrete takes aways for you no matter what your current level is in the chain of command.
    Listen in and learn:
Why CEOs are struggling to deliver in this new environment
How to reduce friction between CEOs and their Board of Directors
How to leverage the power of your Board for business growth and success

Healthy Baby Strategies with Dr. Kevin Boyd -
Here it is! This is part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Kevin Boyd in honor of SIDS Awareness month.
In part 1, we talked about SIDS and how royal chins, anthropology and the work of pioneers like Dr. Christian Guilleminault and Dr. David Gozal have furthered our understanding of what we used to call crib death or cot death. You can check out part 1 in episode 38.
Today in part 2, we take a deeper dive. We get into what our evolved understanding tells us about what we can do proactively to keep our babies safe. And let me say this right now: Dr. Kev, as his young patients call him, is a pediatric, airway-aware dentist, so get ready for some cutting edge strategies to keep our babies healthy.
And my goal is to get these cutting edge practices into the hands of all young couples and parents. So please help me with that goal. How can you do that? Share this episode far and wide with anyone who is having a baby or who plans to have a baby!

How SIDS Inspired a Young Doctor with Dr. David Gozal
“Things can happen in sleep. In this case, bad things.”
These are the words of Dr. David Gozal as he tells the heart-breaking story of how he was introduced to sleep medicine. We featured this sleep medicine pioneer in episode 35 where he talked about kids and school problems in honor of ADHD Awareness. In this bonus episode, you’ll hear Dr. Gozal tell how, as a pediatrician in Israel, he was faced with a difficult task at 3am in the ER, and how this experience drove him to want to know more about what happens during sleep, and why ultimately, his quest led him to the United States.
After you listen to Dr. Gozal’s story about SIDS, listen to episode 38 with Dr. Kevin Boyd, a pediatric dentist who brings an anthropological view point to the question of what contributes to SIDS.

  • TCSP 38 -- SIDS, Royal Chins, and Anthropology with Dr. Kevin Boyd, part 1
SIDS, Royal Chins and Anthropology with Dr. Kevin Boyd
In this episode, we go beyond the workplace and look into something that impacts us on a profound level: the death of an infant. October is PREGNANCY & INFANT LOSS AWARENESS month and we’re focusing on SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome—or what we used to call Crib Death.
Each year, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) in the United States. In 2019, about 1,250 deaths of those 3,400 deaths were due to SIDS itself.
But here’s the thing: what does that really tell us? After all, a syndrome according to Merriam Webster is “a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition”. So SIDS helps us know what happened: tragically, an infant died suddenly and unexpectedly. But the term SIDS doesn’t tell us WHY. And there’s a reason for that: It’s because we don’t know why.
That’s what makes me so grateful for the ongoing work of pioneering researchers in the fields of sleep medicine and airway health. With each new discovery, we take another step forward toward understanding the WHY of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome—and each step forward brings us closer to the the ultimate goal of preventing it.
Today on The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, we have the privilege of hearing from one of these pioneers in the field, Dr. Kevin Boyd. Let’s listen in.
Listen and get answers to these questions:
How anthropology and royal chins give us a new window into overall health
Why the novel “Airway Health” perspective is the backbone of health, from infancy through adulthood
What we can we do—even before our babies are born— to give our them the best chance of a healthy life

Tonsils, Tongues & Sleep Problems with Chris Zombek, BSDH, COM
We’re bringing you this episode during ADHD Awareness month.
If you listened to episode 35, you heard the very compelling conversation I had with Dr. David Gozal about kids with behavioral and learning problems—two things which often go hand-in-hand with ADHD. Dr. Gozal shared an amazing story about how he came to uncover the underlying problems in a group of kids with behavioral and learning problems—the bottom 25% of the class as Dr. Gozal puts it. And , more importantly, you got new insights into how to find solutions to these kinds of mental and emotional energy challenges that are so common in today’s children. If you haven’t listened to episode 35 with Dr. Gozal, check it out. And while you’re at it, subscribe to The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast because we have an amazing podcast coming up soon with Dr. Kevin Boyd who shares some incredible insights on the topic of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
Today, we get into new territory…
We’re looking at WHY so many of these kids have sleep challenges in the first place. Now you may be thinking "SCREENS—our cellphones are wreaking havoc on sleep."
There is truth to that and it’s good you know because we have to be aware of these kind of “sleep hygiene” things that can wreak havoc on our sleep.
But here on The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, you get more than sleep hygiene.
We bring you the eye-opening solutions… the “Wait, what??” kind of insights that let you look at a problem in a new way--a way that brings you to solving the underlying problem. And that’ exactly what we get into with today’s guest, Chris Zombek.
Chris’s long career as a dental hygienist gave her access to the stunningly successful field of orofacial myofunctional therapy. Yep, it’s a mouthful to say! And that’s a happy coincidence because the mouth is actually the focus of orofacial myofunctional therapy. If we can geek out on the Latin roots for a moment:
    myo means “muscle”
    oro refers to oral, and
    facial refers to face!
So if we work backwards, orofacial myofunctional therapy is therapy that focuses on the function of the muscles in the face and the mouth. And can you take a guess which muscle is most important? If you’re like most people, you are in for a surprise…
Listen and get answers to these important questions:
What does thumb sucking and collar biting tell you about sleep problems?
What’s really going on when your school-aged child wets the bed?
Why does the removal of the tonsils and the adenoids have such a high failure rate?
And if you’re a parent or a teacher looking to help these struggling kids in your life, get the guide I wrote for parents here.
