  • TCSP 51 -- Health Care Plans: Get More for Less with Nelson Griswold
Health Care Plans: Get More for Less with Nelson Griswold |
And so it continues…the disruption of just about everything in the way we do business, including how we attract and retain top talent. Offerings like video interviews, remote opportunities, and even full “work from home” positions are now common. These and other employee-centric modifications make a business more attractive to top talent.
But in this high-stakes game of talent attraction, there is one offering that’s been overlooked. And it’s a valuable one…valuable to both employees and employers alike.
So what is this valuable but overlooked offering? Your workplace health care plan.
When it comes to health care plan, the old business model persists. And not surprisingly, it’s a model that benefits the insurance companies. In a nutshell, you pay more and you get less. How much more? According to the Kaiser family foundation, premiums have tripled since 1999. Despite this increase in premiums, deductibles have gone up. And the levels of service have not gone up!
So as an employer you’re paying more, you’re employees are paying more…and all for the same product.
There’s no ROI, and there’s no other part of a business plan where this would be acceptable. But it’s overlooked because, well, the health care industry is a behemoth and has long had the upper hand.
But that changes when you find out there is an alternative to paying higher premiums and higher deductibles.
And in this Business Impact Series episode, you get the insider’s view of this alternative to old school health care benefits. We welcome Nelson Griswold. Nelson is a two-time bestselling author and the nationally recognized authority on delivering high-quality, affordable employer health care by disintermediating the insurance company. He’s a columnist for Employee Benefit News magazine and chairman of the ASCEND conference that is disrupting employer health care. A dynamic keynote speaker, Nelson has spoken at every major industry conference, including the prestigious World Health Care Congress.
    Listen and learn:
How your workplace health care plan repels the top talent you’ve worked so hard to attract
The jaw-dropping truth behind the online physician directories
The simple steps to take control of your workplace health care plan and control costs and quality
Let’s jump in to this eye-opening and empowering conversation with health care benefits visionary Nelson Griswold.

  • TCSP 50 -- Leadership Starts Here with Steve Lishansky
Leadership Starts Here with Steve Lishansky |
This week we’re peeling back another layer of the leadership onion. In episode 49, we asked this fundamental question: What do leaders do?
We explored how building trust is mission critical and then got stellar communication strategies that do just that from Allison Shapira, leadership communication expert.
This time around on the Business Impact Series, we go another layer deeper in that proverbial onion by asking this question: Where does leadership start?
After all, having a thorough understanding of where leadership starts is critical in the best of times—and as we all know, we are a far cry from the best of times. • TCSP 49 -- Top Talent, Leaders & Trust with Allison Shapira
Top Talent, Leaders & Trust with Allison Shapira |
Let’s start with a fundamental question:
    What do leaders really do?
In the words of the legendary John P. Kotter: “They don’t make plans. They don’t solve problems. They don’t even organize people. What leaders do is prepare organizations for change and help them cope as they struggle through it.”
So that’s what leaders really do. They do the work of preparing for and coping with change.
With the unending changes that have been thrust upon the world, it’s no wonder leaders are under a tremendous burden now. And it’s no wonder so many are losing sleep as a result!
Now if you’re a regular listener of The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, you know we don’t want anyone losing sleep!
And so we continue to support CEOs and business leaders by bringing them the ideas and insights they need to succeed in turbulent times.
We feature the best of the best in corporate leadership—the thought leaders and the innovators—the ones the CEOs call when they need help.
Whether you’re the CEO of a multinational corporation or the CEO of your family, each episode gives you what you need to lead so you can get the sleep you need.
So what do you need to lead through change? Of course, high performance sleep™ is your foundation. But beyond that, is there a key skill that separates the highly successful leaders from the rest?
The answer is a simple one: communication.
And if you hear that word and sum it up as “Communication is what we say and how we say it”, you’re right—that’s true.
    But there’s more.
Communication has an end goal, and that goal is to build trust. And you achieve that end goal…that trust…when you communicate, but only if you communicate with impact. And that’s exactly what we get into in this next installment of our Business Impact Series.
Our guest is Allison Shapira, a leader in Leadership Communication. Allison is the author of Speak with Impact: How to Command the Room and Influence Others . She works with leaders to help them speak clearly, concisely, and confidently to build the trust that propels others to carry forth their vision.
    Listen and learn:
why communication is your key strategy to attracting and retaining employees in challenging times
how to maintain your authenticity when you have a message you don’t want to deliver
the 3 questions everyone should ask themselves before speaking

  • TCSP 48 -- Presenteeism, Headaches and Your Bottom Line with Dr. Stasha Gominak
Presenteeism, Headaches and Your Bottom Line with Dr. Stasha Gominak |
In this episode of The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, we talk about something all too common: the headache.
It’s a topic we need to talk about because the negative impact of headache is huge. Now, I don’t mean the “Honey, I have a headache” kind of situation, although I’m sure that has huge impact on anyone hearing it.
What I mean is headache and the negative impact it has on your bottom line. Recent research out of Portugal concludes: “Headache has a significant economic burden, as measured by work loss costs, in Portugal.”
Now let’s pick apart that phrase “work loss costs.” Work loss costs can be the result of a variety of factors. One example is an absent employee. When an employee is not at work, his individual productivity is obviously cut by 100%. But what about the more sinister relative of absenteeism…what we call presenteeism?
As defined by Harvard Business Review, presenteeism is when your employee is on the job…but not fully functioning.
Presenteeism can cut individual productivity by one-third or more. And no matter how present you may be at this particular moment, it’s easy to appreciate how a loss of 1/3 of productivity has a significant impact on your bottom line.
So what can you do to mitigate the negative impact has on your bottom line? That’s what we get into today with our guest, Dr. Stasha Gominak.
If her name sounds familiar, you may have heard our scintillating conversation in episode 24 about Vitamin D. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, download it now. We get into critically important information for keeping healthy in times like we finds ourselves now.
If Stasha Gominak’s name is not familiar, here’s the important stuff:
Dr. Gominak is a retired neurologist who made a fascinating discovery while treating thousands of patients with neurological illness. She discovered one treatment that helped patients dramatically: improved sleep. And you can bet that headache—and even migraine—was a chief complaint of many of her patients. Lucky for those patients, Dr. Gominak’s insights and innovations allowed them to resolve their pain—and regain pleasure and productivity in their lives at home and at work.
    Listen and learn:
Why headache plays a unique role in presenteeism
How to tell if your trusty sleep tracker is NOT trustworthy
How to mitigate the negative impact headache has on your bottom line

  • TCSP 47 -- Lead Remote, Office or Hybrid Employees with Heather Hansen O'Neill
How to Lead Remote, Office or Hybrid Employees for Massive Success |
Remember when we used to ask each other this simple question: “Where do you work?” Nowadays, it’s a more complicated question: “Where do you DO your work?”
So what’s your answer? Are you home working remotely thanks to zoom and a good VPN? Are you trekking into the office because you have a strong in-person component to your job, like maybe, running the company’s data center? Or are you like many people and now working under some hybrid model?
There’s been such an evolution around where we do our work that even big companies have made fundamental changes. For example, Citigroup has taken the step of renaming each of its roles. They now have 3 kinds of roles:
    “remote” roles
“resident” roles for those jobs that just have to be done at the branch, and
    "hybrid" roles.
So that’s wonderful that Citigroup has worked all that out, but many leaders are still trying to figure out how to best answer the question of where do you do your work—and it’s the kind of thing that keeps them up at night!
And so for this episode of our Quarter 4 Business Impact Series—the last one before we ring in the new year--we give you new perspectives and strategies to answer this very pressing question:
How can you lead employees and achieve massive results when everyone’s trying to figure out “Where’s the office??”
Answering that question is exactly what we get into in this conversation.
Our guest today is Heather Hansen O’Neill. Heather is the co-author of Where's the Office? Moving Today's Leaders from What IS to What CAN BE . Heather wrote this book with Wilford A. Lewis, and lucky for us because this very timely book gives leaders the perspective and the strategies to move from physical space to mind space for optimal results.
