Bio of the artistKaren was born and educated in the U.S., with a break of one year during high school, as an exchange student in France. She loves many things and had been playing the piano up till the end of university, finishing with a Master of Music degree in Viola da Gamba at New England Conservatory, and professional performance for several years. After that she moved to Switzerland where she studied with Jordi Savall.. She also teaches different approaches to learning English, music and music pedagogy. She has trained in the F.M. Alexander Technique and of course the MDH Breathing Coordination.
What she shares on this episodeThe “hourglass.” Often when we want to break into something new we are just not familiar enough with the existing culture of that field to know how and what to do. We need to find certain universal constants because things are ever changing, and when they change our personal premeditated road maps need to apply. There are two universal constants as Karen describes them. They are like two halves of the hourglass. It might not seem so, but they need to go together. An hourglass has highly specific form and function – it is a two-part communicative form. One half, awareness of the rules of the game and the second half is the awareness of defining yourself. The more you turn them over they mix a little more. At one point you simultaneously realise that you are aware of all the rules and able to be true to yourself. Awareness of these two different aspects when you’re trying to break into a field is really important and If you find a discrepancy you need to get out of there. The idea being, the more comfortable you become the greater are your chances at succeeding.

What she shares on this episodeAs artists and particularly musicians we are focussed on the musical element of our performance alone. I mean, how often have you stood in front of a mirror or videotaped yourself singing or performing before you actually went up on stage to perform? This process can be really intimidating and scary for most of us, to see ourselves through the worlds eyes. This could mean different things to different people, insecurity about our ability, our looks, our talent and the list goes on. There is hope, Denosh has worked with artists, enabling them to address this area. Her only advice? Practice. That’s right, Practice. When are prepared for what’s to come and we have seen ourselves the way that our audience is going to see us, there really is nothing else holding us back from being excellent performers. Allow yourself to be moulded and to go through that process with courage and humility being true to yourself. On this episode Denosh talks about some measures that you can take as an artist to be in control of and own your performance every single time you put yourself out there.

Bio of the artistSince his debut album The Middle Way, Los Angeles based singer/songwriter/performer/producer Shane Alexander has shaped a distinctive career for himself. Touring the US and 11 other countries - both as a headliner, and as support for Bon Iver, Jewel, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Seal, Styx and Yes, the fiercely independent artist has developed a loyal international fanbase, licensed his original music to appear in over 100 television shows, films and commercials, and recently crossed 16 million streams on Spotify. In 2016 Alexander opened Buddhaland Studios, a beautiful multi-purpose recording, video, performance and writing space in Southern California. After completing his self-produced 6th solo album Bliss at Buddhaland, he went on to produce Shelby Figueroa's debut Highwire - which hit #1 on Amazon's singer/songwriter chart. On Oct 2, in direct response to the tragic and senseless mass-shooting in Las Vegas, Shane wrote and recorded the new single "I'll Be Here" - releasing it only days later.
What he shares on this episodeThe struggle is real for most independent artists. You can really drown in the music industry especially since it has experienced such a drastic change over the last few decades. Its almost imperative that we are able to equip ourselves not just in our art but also to manage our brand. There’s a million ways to get your music heard but it’s always good to have someone in the mix. Maintain a high standard and put a lot of music out there, you never know what will be successful and most importantly establish relationships in the Industry so they know what you’re doing and you’re in the loop.
