The Credible Teacher

I document why vulnerability is so important to build credibility with students and why using community circles are a great way to show students we care about them as individuals.

A student asked me if the c-word started with a 'C' or a 'K' yesterday. I document the follow up conversation and why moments like this create opportunities to build credibility with students.

I document a story about a former student saying I'm their favorite teacher even though it was a difficult year together. And, why taking the time to have conversations with students/classes about expectations consistently, makes us more credible teachers.

I document how and when I came to ask about my children's greatest strengths at their conferences. Also, how a 'strengths over weaknesses' mindset as a teacher makes me (anyone) a more credible teacher.

I document why everything that we do (as humans and educators) is a process (like me rapping in a talent show) and that all that we experience is happening in a timely fashion.

I document a conversation with a colleague about typical frustrations and a story about how one teacher changed the course of a student's life by helping him see theatre from another perspective.

I document the conversation I had with 2 classes today about my knowing that school was different when you had a substitute teacher and why some students are playing the game really poorly.

I document how & partially why I gave up eating lunch and coffee over the last 26 days...and what I've learned about the mentality to do so.

I document and reflect on a situation in which a student is struggling and what kind of perspective may benefit everyone that is supporting him/her as they learn from their decisions.

I reflect on an article I read about teacher credibility and share a story that attempts to encapsulate how I show students I care even if it means they hear something they don't want to hear.
