HOUR ONE PLAY HARD:  Jason Spiess and Sterling are in another “Time Masheene” episode of The Crude Life Morning Show. Dealing with last week’s out of town meetings the two continue to play catch up.

The Crude Life made it’s SPUD-Tactular announcement, which is that it will be smoking potatoes at the Bakken BBQ this year as a symbolic way to offer even more inclusion, diversity and options.

Spiess, who is also the emcee of the Bakken BBQ, said the potatoes that will be used for the Bakken BBQ were grown on a farm outside of Dawson, ND, and will be cooked in a recycled and repurposed piece of the Dakota Access Pipeline.  

The Crude Life will also be working as an Environmental Energy Ambassador during the Bakken BBQ with The Bakken Bridge, an East/West energy awareness program.  High school students from the Fargo Moorhead area will be attending the Bakken BBQ, handing out potatoes as well as learning first hand about the oil and gas industry and environmental energy.  

In addition to The Crude Life’s Smoked Potatoes and regular

offerings, The Bakken BBQ will honor and celebrate First Responders as

part of the event.    

A first responder is a person with specialized training who is among

the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency,

such as an accident, natural disaster, or terrorism. First responders

typically include law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMT’s and

firefighters.  

The Bakken BBQ will be honoring their service all night on stage and at the event.

Michael (Caleb) Amick

Amick is a reporter for The Dickinson Press, however, in this interview he is representing himself. The interview surrounding his recent article on Salt Water Spills in North Dakota and attorney Fintan Dooley’s presentation at Dickinson State University.

In a presentation to Professor Toby Stroh’s reclamation class at Dickinson State University on March 2, attorney Fintan Dooley said that state laws in North Dakota require oil companies to not only haul away their equipment, but restore the site to its original state. Dooley alleges that this hasn’t been properly done for decades as a direct result of improper enforcement of the law —a failure Dooley attributed to corruption but did not offer any direct evidence of.

The North Dakota Industrial Commission, Dooley alleged, has allowed oil companies to hold off on cleaning up and restoring contaminated land and only to later file bankruptcy or “walk off,” with the expectation being that the land being reclaimed will be covered at the expense of the people of North Dakota.

From modeling to clay shooting, and almost every aspect of the oil field, Kathrine Hill has 30+ years of work and knowledge that has helped make her successful today. Unlike most of our guests, Kathrine found her industry niche in the mineral market and now has much experience and knowledge to offer.

As with any good story, we start at the beginning with Kathrine sharing how she first got introduced to the oil and gas industry and her journey from there to where she is now. Did you know Kathrine used to be a model?! This was before starting her own company. From the ground up, Kathrine learned through a hands-on process and it was a real success for her!

“… I looked at deal after deal after deal, and I learned as I went. I learned to be quiet, listen a lot, and I would literally, sometimes, in meetings I would hold up my hand if I didn’t know what they were talking about.” – Kathrine Hill

Kathrine speaks about working to get taken seriously and how she overcame that to study almost every aspect of the oil and gas industry. Then she finally settled into the buying and selling of mineral rights. Kathrine explains how her part in the industry works. 

“When you’re buying and selling royalties, or if you own royalties, you don’t have the drilling expense because you’re not part of the well; you’re part of the lease.” – Kathrine Hill

Kathrine talks about how the mineral industry has changed in the recent years and worked its way into the trends that are in play now. She also discusses where the competition is the most fierce for those involved in mineral rights and why she chooses to conduct her business elsewhere.

This last year has been a bumpy ride for all of the oil and gas industry; the mineral market has had its ups and downs as well. Kathrine talks about what she believes will happen to the market in the near future. She also discusses briefly the many uses and items that come from oil.

“Yeah, everybody can still make money between the $50 and $70 dollar range and it doesn’t hurt the common good as far as gas prices. I mean, most people don’t even know that gas comes from oil.” – Kathrine Hill

It’s always helpful to have access to contact knowledgeable people and thankful Kathrine talks about where to reach her. She talks about being a “luddite,” there’s a discussion about living relatively media free, and Kathrine highlights why it’s important to not over saturate oneself with stress and negative news.

Fun Fact: Kathrine used to go clay shooting and strangely enough, it helped her make friends in the industry. She recommends Desks and Derricks for any woman who is interested in a wonderful resource to help educate and empower females within the industry.

Circling back to the difficulties of women in male dominated arenas, the conversation begins to compare clay shooting to the oil and gas industry. Even though Kathrine’s experience with shooting was much different than the dynamics in the energy industry; it turns out, the two fields are similar.

“It’s kinda’ like the oil business in that, you know, people will watch you long enough and if you keep showing up and you keep doing well they will eventually take you seriously.” – Kathrine Hill

We’re-we’re going to talk a little bit about Keep America Beautiful because it is the month of April, and one of the arguments I’ve made for a long time, to even where I’ve won an environmental tournament on this platform, which is the oil and gas industry is the leader in the environmental movement, has to do a lot with innovation, has to do a lot with their community building, and it has to do a lot with their actual working with government officials. Which is kind of ironic that they seem to be up against the wall now – their backs – when it comes to what’s known as an ESG movement. Uh, Mr. Ron Gusek of Liberty Oilfield, how are you doing today?

Ron Gusek:  Doing very well, thanks. How are you today, Jason?

Jason Spiess:  Uh, doing fine and thank you for joining us today to talk about this. And, you know, I-I don’t want to necessarily talk about ESG because I’m not really even sure that everybody’s landed on a consensus that, uh, that’s the wave of the future, but I don’t want to also ignore it. But I do want to talk about how oil and gas builds communities and how it’s been helping the environmental movement and how it has been working with government officials over the years, so if you wouldn’t mind, uh, we kind of have a little conversation about that.

Ron Gusek:  That sounds great. Uh, you know, I certainly think a little bit to be determined how that, uh, plays out in the future but, you know, I-I think regardless of-of what metrics we end up measuring ourselves on as an industry, you know, we have a— I know oil and gas can, are going to play a big role in our world for a long, long time to come and I think we have a responsibility as an industry to produce every molecule of oil and gas as cleanly and efficiently as-as-as we can with consideration for what that means for the cost of energy. You know, we, it is the enabler of life as we know it today and-and, you know, while-while there are solutions to all kinds of things, uh, at the end of the day, we need energy to be a sustainable resource for all of us and so we have to find that balance.

Rocky Johnson, 4 Warriors Hydro Excavating, joins Shawn Forbes and Jason Spiess at the Permian Basin Association of Pipeliners Annual Cookoff

Johnson talks about his oilfield journey which started in

agriculture. After entering into the oilfield, Rocky was laid off in

the 2015 downturn and went back to ranching. That only lasted a short

while, as the world of hydro excavating came calling.
