We welcome Suicide Prevention Advocate, Carl David, to the show to discuss suicide prevention and his book "Bader Field".

Bader Field is a survivor’s story, and talks about how death, specifically a suicide, can wreak havoc on loved ones left behind. The book reveals the story of how a family endured struggle and torment after a suicide, and their fight to survive. David uses the book as an outlet to ‘pay it forward’ and help others cope with depression and suicidal tendencies. The author wants for those who are suffering to know that though they may feel lonely,

they are not alone. “Those who are so desperate need to know that they don’t just destroy themselves, but everyone around them as well; their family, friends and acquaintances. I pray that my perilous journey through those darkest days will bring light and hope to anyone on that final path, and draw them back,” states David.

We have a very good topic tonight and guest Activist, Rashida Strober. She has come under fire for these words: 

“Well, well, well would you looky here. ANOTHER FAKE CONSCIOUS MUTHER F-KER EXPOSED. I will never support him nor his music with one dime of my money and encourage all dark skinned women not to either!” she wrote.

Strober’s comments gained traction with folks who either fully support the “Dark Skin Is Beautiful” campaign founder or didn’t share her views on Lamar. In response to her nonsupporters, Strober posted the following response:

I see calling out and exposing self hating fake black men who speak about consciousness but date and marry NON DARK SKIN WOMEN brought you haters to my page. WELL SHARE THIS MUTHERFUKING POST!!! These type of fake coons are the worst of the worst. DARK SKIN is the essence of true blackness and if these fakers were really and truly conscious they would MARRY DARK SKINNED WOMEN!!! You pissed ?? GOOD!!!

Since 1998, Rashida Strober has been known as an advocate for people with darker complexions, according to her biography, which mentioned that her cause was inspired after years of bullying from classmates who put her down because of her complexion. Stage plays created by the Florida native include “A Dark-Skinned Woman’s Revenge” and “Ice Cream Lady’s Dream.”

Tonight we welcome author and Jonestown survivor Laura Johnston Kohl to the show. When 914 members of Peoples Temple and four visiting Americans died in Guyana, South America on November 18, 1978, Laura Johnston Kohl survived.  She was one of 87 who lived through the trauma. 

After participating with the Black Panthers, and attending Woodstock, Laura moved into Peoples Temple in California in 1970, and was an active and enthusiastic member until the day it ended.  She moved to Guyana in March 1977.  She frequently traveled between Georgetown and Jonestown, a 24-hour boat ride, but moved into Jonestown in October 1978.  Laura’s survival was a fluke.

It took twenty years for Laura to rebuild her life and have the determination to research this tragedy.  The first ten years were spent in Synanon.  Then, she reunited with many of the other survivors to put the pieces together and to get some understanding.  After ten years she wrote her autobiography.

Is White Better? The lighter you are does that make you prettier? Smarter? More desirable. Many women of color are using bleaching elements to make themselves lighter. And if they are not using the chemicals they may also be doing it by photoshopping to make them appear lighter aka whiter. What does this do for a woman's self esteem? Where is this coming from? 

Tonight we have Ng'endo Mukii, Animator of “Yellow Fever” interview. She is a Kenyan animator, director, and editor. She has created a powerful film that deals with this practice of bleaching skin and how the decision to do so in ingrained in little black girls at a very young age.
