On today's podcast we wanted to share with you the story of how we started a research institute on the back of a napkin. No really - we're serious. In the midst of the first lockdown we were asked to create an internship program for students at Charleston Southern University so that they could graduate. From that, the Community Research Institute was born. We started the institute to not only give paid work to the students, but to serve local businesses in the Low Country. A few short years later, and we're now working with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to place interns with local businesses in need of social media and marketing help. We're exceptionally proud of this program and you can learn more about it at communityresearchinstitute.org.

We firmly believe in using our podcast platform for good. So we've decided to share some of our favorite charities and nonprofits in the ad breaks. Today's podcast is brought to you by Women Make Movies. The Good Doctors first encountered this fantastic organization when they offered free virtual viewings of their selection of films for Native American Heritage Month in 2020. For 45 years, Women Make Movies have been empowering and supporting women filmmakers, directors, editors, etc. Direct from their own website: "As the world's leading distributor of independent films by and about women, we amplify historically ignored voices and challenge the mainstream media." Since a big focus for us here at Abbey Research is art made by and about women and other marginalized groups, it's a match made in heaven! Head to wmm.com to sign up for their newsletter, register for a screening, or donate today!

We are in constant search of locally owned bookstores. Since we spend so much time in Charleston, South Carolina these days for work, it's no surprise that we visited Blue Bicycle Books on one of our recent trips. Located in historic downtown Charleston, BBB (as they call themselves) has a wide selection of reading material, from bestsellers to local history to rare used books and collectibles. You know we left with a tote bag full of gems. You can find more about this lovely store by visiting their website at bluebicyclebooks.com.

One of the things my mother instilled in me is that when people are in crisis, they still need to eat. Evidently, Chef Jose Andres believes the same. His organization, World Central Kitchen, shows up anywhere in the world where a disaster has happened - natural or man-made - and cooks for folks while the aftermath gets sorted. They've cooked for first responders fighting COVID, Puerto Rican citizens sorting out their lives after Hurrican Maria's wrath reigned upon them, and more. They also provide training in the culinary arts and do advocacy work towards the elimination of food deserts in the U.S. and abroad. To donate, volunteer, or just to learn more, head to wck.org. They're one of my absolute favorite nonprofits and a go-to whenever we have spare cash in the Donnelly house.
The Good Doctors discuss the immense risk taken on by the whistleblowers before they're protected by whistleblower laws on this week's episode of The Dropout.

We are always looking for creative, handmade gifts. We love to shop on Etsy, because it's where all our fellow crafty nerds live! One of my favorite shops is Ox Eye Floral Company. Based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada - Ox Eye makes gorgeous and unique pressed flower prints. They have a great selection of categories, including digital downloads if you don't want the hassle of shipping! I've given them as birthday, Christmas, and just-because presents. Always shipped quickly and packaged well, I love shopping with this store and I know you will too! Once more, that's Ox Eye Floral Company and you can find them on Etsy - happy shopping!
On a special audio-only episode, Dr. Kristen and her husband, John Donnelly, discuss the complicated legacy of British media personality, philanthropist, and accused predatory sex offender, Jimmy Savile after watching Netflix's recent documentary Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story.

Today's podcast is brought to you by one of my favorite Pittsburgh organizations 412 Food Rescue. Powered by volunteers, or Food Rescue Heroes, the organization uses technology to fight food insecurity. Volunteers download the app, rescue food that is potential waste, and deliver it to non-profits helping the food insecure. It's genius, it's generous, and both The Good Doctors are big fans. Learn more about their work at 412foodrescue.org or if you're listening in the Pittsburgh region download the app to become a Food Rescue Hero today!

We live in such a fractured society, that only seems to be getting more so. Research shows that the way people change their minds about ideas and the way they shift their worldview to include others is through stories and relationships - not shame or statistics. In service to that idea, we run a series on YouTube called 'Welcome to My World'. It's an interview show where Dr. Kristen gets to talk to fascinating folks from all walks of life twice a week about something in their lives the rest of us should know more about. She's chatted about Japanese gaming culture, the universal law of attraction, what it means to be a ghostwriter, and more. Find the series on our youtube channel. We'll see you there.
We're back from our Canadian adventure and corporate retreat! We were fortunate enough to spend an afternoon learning curling while in the Great White North and boy did we learn a lot. Not just about the sport, but the day was a needed reminder that so many things are more complicated than we know! Join us for this live to talk through our experiences and lessons - plus watch a delightful video explanation of curling!

Do you automatically say 'yes' to everything people ask you to do without making sure you can, you know, actually do it? Are you constantly overcommitted and overwhelmed and under-rested? Me too, my friend, and it's been a constant practice over the last few years to change those behaviors. And I'll tell ya, I wish I'd had Jennifer Bassman's book Stop Being a Doormat when I started. It's clear, to the point, and is a great hybrid of a workbook and book, that allows for processing and committing to action steps. You can grab it at Amazon - that's Stop Being a Doormat by Jennifer Bassman.
Now we're getting to the good stuff! The Good Doctors watch and review episode 4 where Elizabeth decides to fully lean in to using lies to keep her company going.

Sometimes the best things do come in small packages. This is the case for The Tiny Bookstore, located just north of downtown Pittsburgh. Though they may be small, they pack a big punch. Black-owned and run with the goal of using their space to speak out against inequality. If they don't have your book in stock, they are great about ordering and delivering it. I have gotten several deliveries from them throughout these pandemic times. Learn more about who they are, what they do, and what they've got at tinybooksPGH.com.
