  • VAULT: [The Crown] S1 E8 Pride & Joy

Welcome to the Episode 8 recap and analysis, where the Good Doctors discuss all the happenings in 'Pride and Joy.' This episode really emphasizes the ongoing battle between Elizabeth Windsor and Elizabeth Regina, and the difficult relationship between Elizabeth and Margaret. Drs. Donnelly and Hinson use Philips behavior to draw out some key leadership lessons, especially for women who are more powerful, or make more money, than their partners.

The most common question we get asked is "what is empathy?" Our answer? It's the consistent decision to understand yourself and others so that we can all have fuller and richer human experiences. It's a simple statement with a lot of complicated implications. We love complications, to be honest, because the more complicated something is, it's usually more real. In this light, we've designed a 2-day virtual masterclass to dig into some of what it looks like to do the work of empathy. We'll have discussions about inclusivity, how everyone has trauma and none of it is comparable, how to set boundaries and why the Puritans were and are the worst, and more. It's us and some special guests for this interactive experience. The next round is February 24 and 25, 2022 and you don't want to miss it. Head to bit.ly/ARmasterclass to sign up. See you there!

  • VAULT: [The Crown] S1 E7 Scientia Potentia Est

Drs. Donnelly and Hinson are chatting about Episode 7 'Scientia Potentia Est.' Perhaps one of the most fascinating episodes of the season, the Good Doctors discuss Elizabeth's education and the restrictive gender roles placed on her, even as a future monarch. This episode shows a more confident Queen and the Drs. talk through the difficulties of being a woman in a position of authority and rank.

We are always looking for creative, handmade gifts. We love to shop on Etsy, because it's where all our fellow crafty nerds live! One of my favorite shops is Ox Eye Floral Company. Based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada - Ox Eye makes gorgeous and unique pressed flower prints. They have a great selection of categories, including digital downloads if you don't want the hassle of shipping! I've given them as birthday, Christmas, and just-because presents. Always shipped quickly and packaged well, I love shopping with this store and I know you will too! Once more, that's Ox Eye Floral Company and you can find them on Etsy - happy shopping!

We love podcasts. We love David Tennant. So when David Tennant decided to do a podcast, we were in like Flynn. David Tennant Does a Podcast With is catnip for The Good Doctors. Each episode features a chat with a different human - usually an actor, musician, or politician. David is kind, witty, and thoughtful, as we all knew he would be, and it makes him a fabulous interviewer. We're telling you about this podcast because it's an excellent empathy exercise. Empathy is all about asking questions and listening, it's a simple, yet difficult, place to start. These convos are perfect for the morning commute or short flight - a little learning, a little laughter, and away you go! On today's podcast, we wanted to share with you the story of how we started a research institute on the back of a napkin. No really - we're serious. In the midst of the first lockdown, we were asked to create an internship program for students at Charleston Southern University so that they could graduate. From that, the Community Research Institute was born. We started the institute to not only give paid work to the students but to serve local businesses in the Low Country. A few short years later and we're now working with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to place interns with local businesses in need of social media and marketing help. We're exceptionally proud of this program and you can learn more about it at community research institute dot org.

We are in constant search of locally owned bookstores. Since we spend so much time in Charleston, South Carolina these days for work, it's no surprise that we visited Blue Bicycle Books on one of our recent trips. Located in historic downtown Charleston, BBB (as they call themselves) has a wide selection of reading material, from bestsellers to local history to rare used books and collectibles. You know we left with a tote bag full of gems. You can find more about this lovely store by visiting their website at bluebicyclebooks.com.

One of the things my mother instilled in me is that when people are in crisis, they still need to eat. Evidently, Chef Jose Andres believes the same. His organization, World Central Kitchen, shows up anywhere in the world where a disaster has happened - natural or man-made - and cooks for folks while the aftermath gets sorted. They've cooked for first responders fighting COVID, Puerto Rican citizens sorting out their lives after Hurrican Maria's wrath reigned upon them, and more. They also provide training in the culinary arts, and do advocacy work towards the elimination of food deserts in the U.S. and abroad. To donate, or volunteer, or just to learn more, head to wck.org. They're one of my absolute favorite nonprofits and a go-to whenever we have spare cash in the Donnelly house.

Today's episode is brought to you by another one of my favorite podcasts, 'This Land.' 'This Land' is produced by Crooked Media and hosted by Rebecca Nagle - a Cherokee writer, advocate, and language learner. Rebecca uses her keen investigative skills to dig deep into specific court cases and their myriad of implications for Indian Country. Season 1 was a cracker and Season 2 dropped in August 2021. This most recent season explores how a custody case over a Native child has far-ranging implications for the sanctity of the Indian Child Welfare Act, tribal sovereignty, and civil rights. The show is a fabulous mix of history and culture with a sprinkling of mystery and legal theory - what a combo! Find 'This Land' on any podcaster service and tell all your friends!

Did you know that there are only three countries in the world that weren't colonized by a European entity at some point in their history? We didn't either, but it got us thinking about how important the legacy of colonization must be on all the others and we launched our Colonizer's World Tour in 2021 to investigate further. Each week, we look at a different country, the legacy of colonization within it, and what that place can teach the rest of us about empathy and inclusivity.
