Today's episode is sponsored by the book 'The Influential Voice: Saying What You Mean for Lasting Legacy,' by our friend, coach, and colleague Tricia Brouk. The Influential Voice is a brand new book compiled of stories, personal and historical, that remind us of the power of our voice—along with practical techniques for how to use your voice, on stage and off, in a way that will be the most effective.
We're digging into the vault for a Good Doctors' classic: The Crown! Start all over again with season 1, episode 1. In this episode, they outline the impetus behind choosing this show, and talk through the first episode 'Wolferton Splash.' They bring up the surprising focus on men in a show about the Queen, the difficulty of managing power and traditional gender roles, the necessity of preparation in leadership changes and definitions of leadership.

Today's podcast is courtesy of my new favorite self-care supplier, Asutra. I found Asutra while skimming a listicle on Black women-owned businesses. Asutra is not only women-owned but women-led with Stephanie Morimoto as CEO and Venus Williams, you heard me, that Venus Williams, as part owner and Chief Brand Officer. I use their Lavender scented yoga mat detox cleaner and it's gorgeous. They have a whole range of products that are affordable, organic, and cruelty free. Learn more and happy shopping at asutra.com.

The most common question we get asked is "what is empathy?" Our answer? It's the consistent decision to understand yourself and others so that we can all have fuller and richer human experiences. It's a simple statement with a lot of complicated implications. We love complications, to be honest, because the more complicated something is, it's usually more real. In this light, we've designed a 2-day virtual masterclass to dig into some of what it looks like to do the work of empathy. We'll have discussions about inclusivity, how everyone has trauma and none of it is comparable, how to set boundaries and why the Puritans were and are the worst, and more. It's us and some special guests for this interactive experience. The next round is February 24 and 25, 2022 and you don't want to miss it. Head to bit.ly/ARmasterclass to sign up. See you there!

Dr. Kristen and I are in constant search of locally owned bookstores. Since we spend so much time in Charleston, South Carolina these days for work, it's no surprise that we visited Blue Bicycle Books on one of our recent trips. Located in historic downtown Charleston, BBB (as they call themselves) has a wide selection of reading material, from bestsellers to local history to rare used books and collectibles. You know Dr. K and I left with a tote bag full of gems. You can find more about this lovely store by visiting their website at bluebicyclebooks.com.
In a special, audio-only episode, The Good Doctors discuss their hopes and dreams for 2022, personally and professionally, and how they're approaching planning for the new year in COVID season 3.

Did you know that there are only three countries in the world that weren't colonized by a European entity at some point in their history? We didn't either, but it got us thinking about how important the legacy of colonization must be on all the others and we launched our Colonizer's World Tour in 2021 to investigate further. Each week, we look at a different country, the legacy of colonization within it, and what that place can teach the rest of us about empathy and inclusivity. Join us as we travel the world via YouTube videos, academic research, and artistic output. Head to our YouTube channel to get some stamps in your intellectual passport.
The Good Doctors wrap up their holiday movie coverage (and 2021!) with the adorable Lifetime film 'Under the Christmas Tree' despite some confusing chickens, this one was a hit, nailing casual inclusivity and managing a comforting realism that's rare in a holiday romcom!

I love true crime - learning about it, thinking about motivations and realities. I also love laughing, relationships, warm conversations between friends, and righteous anger over the terrible things humans do to each other. All of this is why I love the Sinisterhood podcast. Hosted by Christie Brown and Heather McKinney, the pod covers crimes we've all heard of - your Jeanbenes, your Nexiums - and ones you haven't - like Gwen Shamblin and the Weighdown workshop. Told with research rigor, empathy, and humor - I cannot recommend this one highly enough. Find sinisterhood pod anywhere you find podcasts.
Sharyl West Loeung joins The Good Doctors again today for an update on an earlier GDD about the fabulous work that her and her students at Baylor University are doing for vaccine advocacy.

Today's podcast is brought to you by one of my favorite Pittsburgh organizations 412 Food Rescue. Powered by volunteers, or Food Rescue Heroes, the organization uses technology to fight food insecurity. Volunteers download the app, rescue food that is potential waste, and deliver it to non-profits helping the food insecure. It's genius, it's generous, and both The Good Doctors are big fans. Learn more about their work at 412foodrescue.org or if you're listening in the Pittsburgh region download the app to become a Food Rescue Hero today!
Well, unfortunately, this one wasn't a winner! The Good Doctors discuss what went right with A Christmas Treasure (Jordin Sparks) and what went wrong (pretty much everything else).

One of the things my mother instilled in me is that when people are in crisis, they still need to eat. Evidently, Chef Jose Andres believes the same. His organization, World Central Kitchen, shows up anywhere in the world where a disaster has happened - natural or man-made - and cooks for folks while the aftermath gets sorted. They've cooked for first responders fighting COVID, Puerto Rican citizens sorting out their lives after Hurricane Maria's wrath reigned upon them, and more. They also provide training in the culinary arts and do advocacy work towards the elimination of food deserts in the U.S. and abroad. To donate, or volunteer, or just to learn more, head to wck.org. They're one of my absolute favorite nonprofits and a go-to whenever we have spare cash in the Donnelly house.
In a special, audio-only episode, The Good Doctors talk about their own holiday traditions with family and friends: food, movies, music, and decorations!
