On this episode, Dr. Chanda and Jillian unpack the impossible work standards for Black Women. They conduct a case study on Saweetie to show the constant public scrutiny Black women face when falling short of society’s expectations. By zeroing on women in hip hop, they discuss how misogyny, patriarchy, and anti-Blackness create double standards about mediocrity and excellence.
Ultimately, they wrestle with the reality that “As a black woman, you have to work extra hard for a seat at the table that you prepared. And even when you get there, you have to justify your presence.”
