You know the Traditions.
But do you know AA’s best kept secret?
The Twelve Concepts may be some of the most overlooked wisdom in recovery.
Most people in Alcoholics Anonymous know the Twelve Steps. Many know the Twelve Traditions.
But ask about the Twelve Concepts, and you may get a very different response.
So, what are they and why should anyone outside of the General Service Office care?
In this special episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Joe sits down with returning guest Dave S., sober since January 1, 1987, to take the mystery out of one of AA’s most overlooked pieces of wisdom.
This isn't a lecture, and you won't need to memorize twelve more things.
Instead, Dave draws from nearly four decades of recovery and service to explore the principles behind the Concepts: trust, delegation, listening, leadership, responsibility, humility, and making sure every voice matters.
And it turns out those principles don't stop at the doors of an AA meeting.
They show up in marriages, families, sponsorship, friendships, workplaces, and everyday life.
Dave shares what years of service have taught him about letting go of control, trusting other people, developing leaders, listening to the minority voice, and remembering that no individual owns AA.
Most importantly, Joe and Dave explore why any of this matters to the alcoholic who simply wants to stay sober and help someone else.
The Steps help us recover.
The Traditions help us stay together.
The Concepts help us serve.
You may come away from this episode with a better understanding of the Twelve Concepts.
And we hope you come away with a better understanding of yourself.
Important Episode Note: Neither Joe nor his guest speak for Alcoholics Anonymous. This conversation reflects personal experiences, observations, and opinions, and does not represent official AA positions.
