He spent 28 years trying to get sober.
The problem wasn't that he couldn't stop. The problem was he didn't understand what was wrong.
Jason L. spent nearly three decades in and out of recovery.
Detoxes. Treatment centers. Sober living homes. Jail cells in three different states. Meetings, relapses, and countless attempts to put his life back together.
He had the desire to stop. He just couldn't figure out why he always went back.
For years, Jason believed he was hearing the same message in recovery. Then one day, in a meeting focused on the Twelve Steps, he realized he wasn't hearing something old at all. He was hearing something he had never truly understood before.
That moment changed everything.
In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Jason shares how a deeper understanding of alcoholism and addiction finally gave him a solution after 28 years of searching. He talks about the life-changing amends he made with his mother before her passing, the role prayer and inventory play in his daily life, and why intensive work with others remains at the heart of his recovery.
Today, Jason is active in both Alcoholics Anonymous and Drug Addicts Anonymous. He helped start the first DAA meeting in Illinois, and continues carrying a message of hope to others still struggling.
As Dr. Bob's story says in the Big Book, he had a desperate desire to stop but saw no way out.
Soon after recording this conversation, Jason was diagnosed with a 3 cm tumor in his cerebellum. Thankfully, the neurosurgeon was able to remove the entire brain tumor. Further testing revealed that Jason has Stage IV large cell lung carcinoma that had spread from his lung to his brain. He is currently undergoing treatment.
Please keep Jason, his wife Margaret, and their family in your prayers as they walk this journey with courage, faith, and hope.
