Episode 108 - Julie Lythcott-Haims

Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Julie Lythcott-Haims. Julie's bio: "We humans need agency in order to make our way forward; I am deeply interested in what impedes us.

My first book, the 2015 New York Times bestseller How to Raise an Adult, details how a parent can rob a child from developing agency by over-parenting. It emerged from my decade as Stanford University’s Dean of Freshmen, where I was known for my fierce advocacy for young adults and my fierce critique of the growing trend of parental involvement in the day-to-day lives of college students which was becoming a nationwide trend. I received the university’s Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for creating “the” atmosphere that defines the undergraduate experience, and toward the end of my tenure as dean I began speaking and writing widely on the harm of helicopter parenting. How to Raise an Adult has been published in over two dozen countries and gave rise to a TED talk that became one of the top TED Talks of 2016 with over 4 million views, as well as a forthcoming sequel on how to be an adult, for young adults.

Two years later I published Real American: A Memoir, a critically-acclaimed and award-winning memoir which examines racism through my experience as a Black and biracial person. In it, I detail my personal battle with the low self-esteem that American racism routinely inflicts on people of color, and depict how microaggressions in addition to blunt-force insults can puncture a person’s inner life with a thousand sharp cuts. Real American expresses also, through my path to self-acceptance, the healing power of community in overcoming the hurtful isolation of being incessantly considered “the other.”

In addition to publishing two non-fiction books, my work has appeared throughout the media including in the New York Times, the Times Literary Supplement of London, the Chicago Tribune, The Atlantic, Parents, AsUs, the PBS News Hour, CBS This Morning, Good Morning America, The Today Show, National Public Radio and its affiliates, C-SPAN, the TD Jakes Show, and numerous podcasts and radio shows. I serve on the boards of Foundation for a College Education in East Palo Alto, CA, Global Citizen Year, in Oakland, CA, Common Sense Media, in San Francisco, and on the advisory board of Lean In in Menlo Park, CA. I am a member of the Peninsula chapter of Threshold Choir and I volunteer with the hospital program No One Dies Alone. I am a former corporate lawyer and Stanford dean, and I hold a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard, and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my partner of over thirty years, our two teenagers, and my mother."

Episode 107 - Emily Fairfax, PhD.

Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Emily Fairfax, PhD. Emily is an ecohydrologist and science story teller. This fall, Emily will be joining the Environmental Science and Resource Management department at California State University Channel Islands as an Assistant Professor. Emily recently finished her PhD in Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, and prior to that she earned dual undergraduate degrees in chemistry and physics at Carleton College. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the ecohydrology of wetlands and riparian areas, particularly those that have been impacted by beaver damming. Basically, she studies how water and plants and animals all relate to one another and influence each other.

In addition to ecohydrology research, Emily is actively involved in science education research. She is especially interested in inclusive curriculum development. A firm believer that learning should be fun and accessible for all students, she recently developed a computer game called “Roll a Water-Check!” to teach the hydrologic cycle to high school and undergraduate students. Emily is currently testing the game in various classes and assessing its effectiveness as an educational tool. Emily is also an outspoken advocate and supporter for making field sciences accessible to all students. This work has focused on how to better train instructors to handle the unique accessibility challenges faced in earth and environmental sciences.

"A lot happens in the life of a woman between the ages of 31, when my career began, and 66, which I am now. I have had a meaningful career; I have a wonderful daughter, India, age 28; and I am now at the point where my deepest desire is to take what I've learned and express it in a way that best serves others. Like millions of Americans, I am sickened and saddened to see the state of our country and I believe that I can help.

I do not see American politics today as a conduit for a deep and meaningful transformative experience, either for our citizens or for our country. Our government is now little more than a system of legalized bribery, and our traditional political establishment at its best is a container for an obsolete conversation about democracy, and values, and people. It has become an entity unto itself, more and more disconnected from the everyday lives that are led by people throughout the country. As someone whose entire career has been spent listening to people’s pain, I see the inability of our political establishment to register that pain, and respond to it, as perilous and destructive to our democracy.

Our deepest political problems are expressed on the level of politics, but they are not rooted there. Our deepest problem is the disengagement of the American heart from the values we purport to hold most dear, and the failure of too many of our citizens to vitally participate in the expression of those values. A disengaged citizenry is to society what a weakened immune system is to the body, and that is the level on which as a country we most need revitalization. What America most needs is a renewal of the spirit of our democracy, in the absence of which the political corruption and human devastation that have become all too common in America will continue to erode our nation. As someone who has had a thirty-five-year career facilitating personal and systems transformation, I believe I have expertise and skill that is most needed at this time."

A decade in, Tyler’s music has been featured on dozens of television shows and films (including Roadies and 13 Reason Why). He’s been awarded two national songwriting awards (from The ASCAP Foundation and The Songwriters Hall of Fame) and he’s played for audiences all over the world. From his Brooklyn apartment between 2016-2018, he released 30 episodes of his demo club and podcast as part of a monthly subscription service he called The Secret Lair. It was a collection of audio essays and home made demos. His new album, “The Floating Years” draws from that body of songs, and is his third full length record. It releases early this summer.
