Richard Spoor Inc is at it again, this time running after Anglo American companies for claims of health damage to coal miners. Last week they filed papers in the Gauteng High Court for certification of a class action suit on behalf of mineworkers who were allegedly exposed to unsafe levels of coal dust by the mining company for years. Richard Spoor Inc is well known for many years for filing such class actions and we thought to invite them to explain what informed their reasons behind this current action, but also for you or a relative who may have suffered while working at these mines to understand how you can be part of this. The University of South Africa is back in the news and again for all the wrong reasons. This time they’ve decided to approach the court to challenge Mister of Higher Education Dr Blade Nzimande’s decision to put the university under administration. The Minister’s decision was informed by an independent assessor in March and the 2021 report by the ministerial task team which found corruption and maladministration at the institution. Also on this show, we’ve received a lot of complaints from those studying through UNISA about wrong exam marks, staff not answering their queries, frustration around registrations and the so on.

We take you back to the City of Ekurhuleni this time looking at the dismal financial situation the Metro finds itself. Reports have emerged over the past few months that the municipality is on a brink of total collapse. The DA said in June that the city’s cash flow was sitting at R438m, representing less than 13 days of cash on hand. The EFF’s MMC for Finance, Nkululeko Dunga has denied all the reports in the media saying they are unsubstantiated. The Council is sitting today (Thursday) to debate the issue. Meanwhile, the Ntiyiso 2029/20 Municipal Revenue Maturity Benchmark Report warned about the situation the municipality is finding itself in today which showed that levels of revenue maturity were declining.
