Consumer complaints are surging, with the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud reporting a 26% increase to more than 15,000 complaints this year.

The Ombud’s office has helped consumers recover almost R13 million — but that still raises a bigger question: how many South Africans are walking away without getting what they’re legally entitled to?

Winter is tightening its grip on parts of South Africa, with heavy snow, freezing temperatures, rain and strong winds causing dangerous conditions and disrupting travel across several provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive snow, with parts of the Eastern Cape and Free State among the hardest hit. Several major routes and mountain passes have been affected, although some roads have since reopened.

Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly along the N3 between Harrismith and Van Reenen Pass, where emergency teams are working to prevent black ice.

With the 4 November local government elections fast approaching, police are sounding the alarm over politically motivated violence.

Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane says the killings of political party members are a growing concern, with ANC, EFF, DA and MK Party members among those killed since the start of the year.

And the warning comes as organised crime researcher Julian Rademeyer reports that 25 people have already been killed in pre-election violence, with 22 violent incidents recorded across five provinces.

The Madlanga Commission may have to pause on Fadiel Adams’ testimony, with the suspended MP scheduled to appear under subpoena this morning.

Evidence leaders only received Adams’ sworn affidavit and supporting documents late on Monday night, and could now ask for his testimony to be postponed.
