The Western Cape Education Department drafted guidelines on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in Public Schools. The guidelines would encourage schools to develop more accommodative dress code requirements to allow for LGBTQI learners to express their gender. Some of the other guidelines include introducing gender neutral bathrooms, bringing their partners to school functions (Matric Dance) and participation in school sports. Whilst some have called these guidelines a breakthrough in social transition, there have been concerns raised that the Department has not gotten the draft tabled at the legislature. Those who have condemned the guidelines say that learners will be forced to share bathrooms. To help us unpack
