Parliament has filed an application to the Constitutional Court requesting a six-month extension of the deadline to finalise the amendment, which aims to change the Act to allow citizens to stand for election in the national Parliament and provincial legislatures. Over and above this application, organizations such as the New Nation Movement wrote to the Standing Committee of Home Affairs on their discontent surrounding the public participation process on the amendment bill. In new developments, the Department of Home Affairs appeared before Parliament this past Friday to answer questions surrounding why the amendment bill only became available to the National Assembly on 10th January 2022 and how it would navigate the objections that have been raised during the public participation process in March 2022.
