In 2018, the Women’s Living Heritage Monument was built to honour the women leading the historic march that played a pivotal role in the anti-Apartheid movement. The site also aimed to inspire a new generation of activists to seek social justice in our society. However, the memorial is in a state of disarray after an oversight visit to the building highlighted the lack of maintenance: a leaking roof, fire hydrants and lifts are not working. The government has spent over R200 million on the project and the R80 million to keep the building operational.

Last week Friday (O5 August) marked 46 since the death in detention of Mapetla Mohapi. He was the first Black Consciousness Movement leader killed in detention. Police later claimed that he had committed suicide in his cell, but history proved that this was not true even though nobody was found guilty for his death. Mohapi’s death reminds us of the long list of anti-apartheid activist who were killed in police custody and some of the face reasons given for their deaths, let’s take you down memory lane…

In the past week, the violence that has erupted in Krugersdorp, Tembisa and Kagiso has called into question our perception and the values of the country both locally and to the international communities. Yesterday (Thursday) residents burnt shacks and houses they believe are used by Zama Zamas to hide and commit crimes. Our country is not new to such incidents, a few months ago, Operation Dudula went on a house to house search in what they deemed as ridding communities of drug dealers.
