A few days ago, former politician and co-founder of NPO, Reimagine, Mamphela Ramphele, told News24, that the country was undermining the future of its children by offering Maths Literacy. She went on to say that all children are capable of studying Maths, and listed the LEAP Science and Maths Schools as an example of how students, many of them from disadvantaged backgrounds are able to succeed at Maths with the proper input. We thought we’d speak to a group of experts about this to hear their opinions. Vha-hangwere Khuba is a Maths teacher from Limpopo, who’s also written a textbook that is now widely available.

In a recent ruling, the Constitutional Court of South Africa made it clear that the Commission cannot enforce its own findings like a court can. In other words, if the SAHRC investigates a complaint and makes a ruling, that decision isn’t automatically binding or legally enforceable.

But—and this is the crucial part—the Court didn’t sideline the Commission either. It emphasized that SAHRC findings must carry serious weight. Courts are expected to consider them carefully and give them substantial influence when deciding related cases.
