Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo yesterday (Wed) said that he found it bizarre that a legal firm would want to stop the proceedings of Parliament after a group called New Nation Movement through its lawyers, wrote a letter to Parliament threatening legal action against the election of former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as Speaker. The movement says Mapisa-Nqakula is not fit for the position because of corruption allegations against her and that ANC Caucus members didn’t fully apply their minds to the nomination.

The Ethiopian military and its allies have been accused of widespread sexual violence against women in Tigray, using rape as a strategy of war. In a report, Amnesty International says the scale of violations during the conflict in the north of the country amounts to war crimes. The rights group interviewed 63 women and children from Tigray who said they had been raped by Ethiopian or Eritrean soldiers or pro-government fighters belonging to forces and militias from the neighbouring region of Amhara. The report reveals graphic details shared by the women.  Ethiopian officials have not responded to the allegations.
