The country's 1. 2 million civil servants will receive a one and a half percent wage increase and monthly cash payments of between 1 200 rand and 1 695 rand month for a year starting from now. This as public sector unions representing 60 percent of the workforce have signed an agreement with the state accepting the new wage deal.

Although there has been assurance from government that no one will be forced to take the covid-19 vaccine, the guidelines provided by the Labour Department indicate that employers could be well within their rights to compel workers to get inoculated. Government has reinstated the social relief of disaster grant until the end March 2022. This was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his address last night. He says improved revenue collection has made this possible. He says more people will be able to claim this R350 monthly grant.

The Independent Electoral Commission says it will be going to court for guidance regarding the postponement of the October 27 Local Government Elections. The elections body has accepted the recommendations of the Judge Dikgang Moseneke Inquiry which says the elections will not be free and fair if they are held in October as planned. Moseke says elections should be held by no later than the 22nd of February next year. This given the current climate in the country. But what does the law say about the deferment of elections?

Thousands of learners are back at school this morning following the winter break which was brought forward as the number of covid-19 cases continued to rise. But for some, there will be no school to go back to after nearly 140 schools were set alight mostly in KwaZulu-Natal during a violent looting spree two weeks ago. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says repairing and rebuilding the schools will cost an estimated R300 million. So, what happens now? Where will the funds come from and what happens to learners in those school in the meantime? What about the teachers? Are they well-resourced and prepared?
