The argument of doctors giving antibiotics for almost every ailment has been in the public space for many years. When one visits a doctor, we hardly ever question the medication they give to us. Well Professor Marc Mendelson, from Groote Schuur Hospital says that the rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria – in South Africa and across the globe – is driven by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans and food-producing animals and poses a huge threat to modern medicine. Fifteen-year old Lufuno Mavhunga, who committed suicide on Monday after being bullied by a fellow learner at the Mbilwi Secondary School, has been laid to rest at the Tshirenzheni cemetery in Nzhelele, Limpopo. A video of Mavhunga being assaulted by a fellow learner has been trending since Monday. Mavhunga overdosed on pills a few hours after the assault, and later died in hospital.
