We talk now to Dr Francesca Conradie, a principal investigator at the Clinical HIV Research Unit. She is calling for a renewed focus on TB testing in the country. She says that this will help find new TB cases that she says went missing during the Covid-19 lockdown. Reports indicate that South Africa’s TB programme took a severe knock during lockdown which has left many people undiagnosed.

The Commission for Gender Equality last week welcomed a probe launched by the Department of Health into the forced sterilisation of HIV positive women at state hospitals. It was February when the Commission released its report with testimonies from some of the victims.

A showdown is looming between the Basic Education Department on the one hand and teacher organisations and students on the other, over the department's decision for matric learners to rewrite two exam papers after they were found to have been leaked. Teachers union - SADTU and student body COSAS are expected to head to court this week to seek an urgent interdict challenging the department's decision. Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced on Friday that learners will rewrite Mathematics paper two and Physical Science paper two on the 15th and 17th of this month. An employee of a Johannesburg-based company contracted by the department to print matric exam papers has since been arrested. A Johannesburg woman is accusing the police of wrongful arrest and of adding to her trauma of being abused by her ex-husband. Avanti Naidoo says that her ex-husband had physically abused her for years and that she fears for her life despite having a protection order against him. She says he's now resorted to psychological abuse and had recently laid a false charge against her that resulted in her spending last weekend behind bars.
