Reports coming out of Zimbabwe say that journalist Hopewell Chin’ono is at risk of contracting bronchitis and hepatitis following an outbreak at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison. He has apparently been moved to a cell with 45 other inmates. The cell only has capacity for 16. Chin’ono was taken into custody last week after being accused of breaking his bail conditions.

Meanwhile... ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule has vowed to lobby the Alliance Political Council to stop the impending retrenchments at the SABC. The Council comprises ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, SACP General Secretary Dr Blade Nzimande and the top brass of the labour federation Cosatu including Bheki Ntshalintshali and Zingiswa Losi. The SABC is intending to retrench at least 400 permanent staff employees before the end of this year. But in an exclusive interview with the SABC last night, Magashule promised to call the president to help intervene in the retrenchments at the public broadcaster.
