The City of Cape Town is planning to erect a life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi, despite heavy objections to this initiative. Gandhi was known for his non-violent protests against British colonial rule and his disdain for Africans. A university in Ghana last year removed Gandhi's statue over his reported racist attitude towards Africans.

The Labour Court in Johannesburg has interdicted the planned protest by banking sector workers which was meant to take place on Friday. Judge Hilary Rabkin says the unions failed to comply with section 77 of the labour relations act which gives workers the right to a protect action. She says that Cosatu and South African Society of Banking Officials (Sasbo) are prohibited from enticing workers to participate in the strike as it is deemed unlawful. Meanwhile, the South African Society of Banking Officials SASBO secretary-general, Joe Kokela, says they will seek leave to appeal the court judgment and resubmit a new notice to NEDLAC

Solidarity says Sol-Tech is a technical college that has been registered 12 years ago and not a new university as Mec Lesufi has repeatedly claimed. The union says Sol-Tech is now building a new campus to increase its capacity.

Since the late 1980’s the mining industry has shrunk and thousands of workers were laid off, many banished to the former homelands of Apartheid South Africa and neighbouring countries. Many have since struggled to survive and relied on retirement and other benefits due to them. However, this was not forthcoming, leaving many miners and other workers and their widows destitute.
