One of the biggest tests of the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since coming to power in April last year was the question of Sidama, a zonal administration under the Southern Regional State which is opting for establishing itself separate regional state. Sidama is currently part of the multi-ethnic Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, which is represented in the country's ruling coalition by the Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement. The Sidama, who make up about 5 percent of Ethiopia's 105 million people and are the largest of more than half a dozen ethnic groups in the Southern Nations region, say they will declare their own region today (18/07/2019) unless granted a referendum. Tensions flared on former President Jacob Zuma's second day on the stand in the State Capture Inquiry. Zuma's lawyer, Thabani Masuku, raised concerns over what he said was the way in which Commission's evidence leader, Paul Pretorius, was questioning his client. The Freedom Front Plus has welcomed the Independent Electoral Commission's decision to deregister Black First Land First as a political party. The IEC today ruled in favour of an appeal lodged by the Freedom Front Plus that the BLFs exclusion of membership based on race was contrary to the Electoral Act. The Commission had originally approved the BLF's 2016 registration on the basis that its constitution did not exclude white people from the party's membership. In a statement, the IEC says subsequent admissions by the BLF in its response to the appeal have however clarified Black First Land First’s exclusionary policy...
