Education expenditure ranks amongst the highest cost items of the state’s annual budget. Yet South Africa’s return on this huge investment has been poor and the education system is regarded as being in a constant crisis. The country’s levels of achievement in all areas of education, primarily mathematics, science and reading and writing are poor. At the same time the country is said to be experiencing a skills crisis, not having the requisite skills available within the labour market to meet the needs of the economy. This, despite youth unemployment being well over 50% and the highest in the world, and all this in a context of a looming 4th Industrial revolution.

Workers union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has threatened to haul state arms manufacturer, Denel to the courts. Denel notified its employees that they would not receive their full salaries this month. In an internal memorandum leaked to the media, the company says employees will only receive 85 per cent of their salaries today and the balance will be paid in a week's time.

Two videos of prisoners and warders engaged in illicit behaviour at Durban's Westville Prison have emerged. The cell phone footage shows prisoners snorting what appears to be cocaine and smoking other drugs inside their jail cells. Warders are also seen handing weapons to prisoners and allegedly encouraging them to fight in the videos.

This morning we are in conversation with Home affairs minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to discuss how national government should tighten South Africa's porous borders and ensure it has a database of every person living in the country. We will also look at rampant cross-border crimes such as robbery, murder, smuggling of illicit goods, and stock theft, which have also been attributed to the country's porous borders. Meanwhile EFF leader Julius Malema, during his election campaign stated that should his party came into power; they would do away with the country's borders. He said the move would put an end to the xenophobic violence directed to African foreign nationals and foster a sense of unity.
