Ten people have been confirmed dead after numerous structural collapses in the eThekwini municipality, which includes Durban as a result of persistent thunderstorms. Majority of the incidents are reported to have occurred in Chatsworth, Queensburgh, Overport and Newlands.

There is a growing prevalence of heroin use in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Bay and Durban, as well as in smaller cities and towns, this according to research from The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime. Simone Haysom, a senior analyst from the organisation says heroin is the first drug of choice in several places but the national scale and significance of this shift has been severely underappreciated by the state.
