The abortion issue is largely focused on dealing with the rights of the foetus and the mother, at times the rights and concerns of the father are rarely discussed. Sometimes the mother wants an abortion and the father wants her to have the baby. Is an abortion ever morally wrong because it transgresses the father's rights? This morning on the Talking Point we will discuss whether men and women should have an equal say when it comes to decisions around abortions?

The Malawi Electoral Commission has begun distributing ballot materials to polling stations ahead of next Tuesday's presidential and parliamentary elections. Incumbent president Peter Mutharika will be seeking a second and final term, while his vice president, Saulos Chilima, who left the ruling party in 2018 and is running to defeat Mutharika. President Peter Mutharika has since dissolved his 20 member-cabinet.

Quality Filtration Systems (QFS), the V&A Waterfront desalination plant owner, has terminated its water supply contract with the City of Cape Town. The City was notified of this decision on 7 May. The City is disappointed with this unilateral decision and is now considering the legal ramifications," according to a 9 May media statement from the City. Quality Filtration Systems (QFS) was founded in 1996 and has been supplying filtration and water treatment equipment to the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, industrial and mining sectors and also to municipalities.

Sudan's public prosecutor has charged ousted President Omar al-Bashir with incitement and involvement in the killing of protesters during the mass protests that led to the end of his decades-long rule, as security forces reportedly opened fire on demonstrators with live rounds. Bashir is also facing an investigation over allegations of money laundering and financing of terrorism. The charges were announced as Sudan's military council and opposition groups reached an agreement on a power structure for the country's transition. Statistics South Africa revealed an increase in the unemployment rate. It reported that the number of unemployed people increased by 62-thousand to six-point-two-million in the first quarter of the year. The country's unemployment rate was recorded at 27-point-six per cent in the first quarter of this year from 27-point-one per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018. The grandson of Hendrik Verwoerd, Wynand Boshoff is making his way to the sixth Parliament. Boshoff is leader of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) in the Northern Cape which managed to win 1 seat in the provincial legislature post-elections. Verwoerd was an Afrikaner nationalist who is dubbed the architect of apartheid. Boshoff says he is ready to take on the new challenge.

Recently, one of the largest and most powerful trade unions in the country, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) was again in the news. This time, not so much for its strike activity, but rather the Department of Labour's threat to deregister the union. Some have speculated that this was due to the trade union's strike activity in the mining industry and opposition to Cosatu affiliated and ANC aligned, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
